What are plain cardboard boxes?
A plain cardboard box has no printed artwork. Most are natural brown kraft, left uncoated. Others use white board for a cleaner face without any ink.
Plain still means made to measure. We cut each box to the inside length, width and height you send. That trims empty space, so you use less paper fill and less tape.
Two shapes cover most orders. Slotted cartons close with tape, and folding mailers tuck shut. Both ship flat. To compare other shapes, see the full range of cardboard boxes.
Who buys plain boxes instead of printed ones?
Plain boxes suit any business that wants a snug fit but has no need for a printed outside. Etsy and Shopify sellers often start here while the brand is still taking shape. Warehouses use them for transfers between sites.
Caterers pack supplies in them, and offices ship files and equipment between branches. When branding becomes a priority, custom printed boxes in your size can reuse the same dimensions.
- Etsy and Shopify sellers shipping repeat orders
- Subscription brands that label with stickers or inserts
- Warehouses and fulfillment teams moving stock between sites
- Restaurants and caterers packing supplies and takeout
- Offices, schools and movers boxing files and gear
Which plain box style should I choose?
Style decides how the box opens, how much tape you use and how it looks on arrival. Compare the common choices below, or browse folding mailer box options for shipping orders.
| Style | How it closes | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Regular slotted carton | Top and bottom flaps meet in the middle and are taped | Shipping, bulk packing, storage |
| Roll end tuck top mailer | Lid folds over and tucks into the front panel | Subscription boxes and online orders |
| Half slotted carton | Flaps on the bottom only, open on top | Stock bins and use with a separate lid |
| Two piece tray with lid | Lid slides down over the base | Shoes, gifts and apparel |
How do I measure for a plain box?
Measure the item, not an old box. Give us the inside size, and we account for board thickness around it. Our step by step measuring guide walks through each measurement.
- Measure the longest edge of your product. That is the length.
- Measure the shorter edge across the opening. That is the width.
- Measure from the base to the tallest point. That is the height.
- Add 1/4 to 1/2 in per side if you wrap or pad the item.
- Send the three numbers in inches, or in mm if you prefer.
What board works best for an unprinted box?
With no print to show off, the board choice is about protection and weight. Thinner board keeps shipping costs down. Thicker board handles stacking and rough trips. Read the single wall versus double wall comparison if you are unsure.
- E flute, about 1/16 in (1.5 mm): neat folding mailers for light goods
- B flute, about 1/8 in (3 mm): a dependable choice for most orders
- C flute, about 5/32 in (4 mm): extra cushion for bulkier products
- BC double wall, about 1/4 in (7 mm): heavy contents and tall stacks
- Kraft or white paperboard: small cartons and light trays
Can a plain box still carry my brand?
Yes, and plenty of customers begin this way. A plain outside with a printed message inside keeps costs modest and still gives the buyer something to notice. You can also print one color on a single panel, such as a logo.
Other shops stay fully plain and brand the package with stamps, stickers or printed packing tape with your logo. That suits a product you are still testing. One batch of boxes can also serve several product lines.
Once your artwork settles, moving to print is simple. The size is already locked, so only the ink changes. Options run from one color to full color CMYK, inside or outside.
How should I pack items in a plain box?
A well fitted box needs little help. Good habits still prevent most damage, especially with glass, liquids and sharp corners.
For fragile goods, add corrugated inserts that hold items still instead of loose fill.
- Place heavy items at the bottom and light ones on top.
- Fill gaps until nothing shifts when you shake the box.
- Tape slotted cartons along the center seam and down both ends.
- Seal liquids in a bag and keep them upright.
- Put handling notes on the label, not across the flaps.
What mistakes should I avoid when ordering?
The most common error is sending outside sizes. The box then comes out a fraction smaller inside, which hurts snug items. Always give the inside measurement.
Another is choosing double wall for every order. It is strong, but it adds weight and cost to each package. Many light items travel well in single wall, and the flute guide for corrugated board shows where each type fits.
A third is using one size for every product. Two or three well chosen sizes usually cut void fill and shipping cost more than one big box.
How do I order plain cardboard boxes?
Ordering takes a few minutes. Use the form at the top of this page, or request a quote online. Plain boxes start from $0.30 a box, and the exact figure comes in the quote we email.
Minimums are low and set per job, so small runs are fine.
- Send the inside size, the style and the board you want.
- Tell us whether the box stays fully plain or gets print.
- We email your quote within one business day.
- Approve the free design proof. Production takes 4–6 business days.
- Boxes ship free with tracking and arrive in 2–3 business days.
What happens when the boxes arrive?
Boxes arrive flat and bundled, so they take little room until you need them. Store them dry and away from heat, since damp board loses stiffness.
Fold one first and test it with the real product and its wrapping. Small surprises are easy to fix before you pack the whole batch.
If a box arrives damaged, misprinted or the wrong size, email photos within 10 days. We reprint or refund, as set out in our returns and reprint policy. Shipping is free and tracked to any US address.

Plain Cardboard Boxes: questions
12 answersAre plain cardboard boxes always brown?
No. Brown kraft is the usual choice, but white paperboard is available too. Both stay unprinted unless you ask for print.
Can I get plain boxes in my exact dimensions?
Yes. Each box is made to the inside length, width and height you provide, in inches or mm.
Do I need tape for plain boxes?
Slotted cartons need tape across the seam. Folding mailers tuck shut, so they need little or none.
Is single wall board enough for shipping?
For light and medium orders, usually yes. Move up to double wall BC flute for heavy contents or tall stacks.
Can I add my logo to a plain box later?
Yes. Your size stays the same, and a later order can add one color, two color or full color print.
Can the inside be printed while the outside stays plain?
Yes. Many sellers pick this for a discreet package that still shows a message when opened.
Can I check my plain box size and style before it is cut?
Yes. A free design proof shows the inside size and style you picked. Confirm the dimensions first, and nothing is made until you approve it.
How soon will my plain boxes arrive after I approve the proof?
Plain boxes are produced in 4–6 business days after proof approval. Free tracked US shipping then takes 2–3 business days.
How much do plain boxes cost?
Pricing starts from $0.30 a box. Size, board and quantity set the final figure, which we send by email.
Do the boxes come already assembled?
No. They ship flat in bundles to save space, and each one folds up by hand in seconds.
Are plain boxes good for storage?
Yes. A slotted carton in C flute or double wall holds up well on shelves and in stacks.
What if my order arrives damaged?
Email photos within 10 days. We then reprint the boxes or refund you.
