What is a custom shipping box?

A shipping box is a corrugated carton that can travel on its own. Two flat liners sandwich a fluted center layer, and that wavy layer gives the walls their stiffness.

We make two main shapes. The slotted carton has flaps on top and bottom, and you seal it with tape. The mailer folds up with a hinged lid and locks with tabs.

Both arrive as flat sheets. The creases are pressed in at the factory, so every box folds square and the walls stand straight. For other outer cartons, browse the corrugated and shipping box range.

Who orders custom shipping boxes?

Etsy and Shopify sellers place a big share of our orders. They start with off-the-shelf cartons, then notice how much filler and tape each package swallows.

Once the same few products ship every week, a carton cut to fit saves money quickly. Our page on boxes for small business owners covers more of these cases.

  • Online stores shipping apparel, home goods and gifts
  • Subscription brands sending the same kit every month
  • Warehouses moving goods between locations
  • Restaurants and bakeries sending catering or gift orders
  • Offices mailing welcome kits and swag to staff

How do I measure for a shipping box?

Measure the product itself, not an old carton. Length is the longest side, width is the next one, and height is the vertical side.

Then add room for padding. A snug fit needs about 1/4 in on each side. With bubble wrap or crinkle paper, allow 3/4 to 1 in.

Our guide on how to measure a box shows which way to read each side.

  1. Set the item down the way it will sit inside the box.
  2. Measure length, width and height from the outer edges.
  3. Add your padding allowance to each number.
  4. Send us those inside sizes in inches, or in mm if you prefer.

Which board should I choose for shipping boxes?

Two liners enclose one fluted layer in single wall board. C flute is about 5/32 in (4 mm) and suits most everyday packages. B flute is about 1/8 in (3 mm) and prints a little sharper.

Double wall BC flute is about 1/4 in (7 mm). Pick it for heavy items, glass, or boxes that sit at the bottom of a stack.

Still unsure? Read about single wall versus double wall boxes for real examples.

BoardWall thicknessTypical use
E flute single wallAbout 1/16 in (1.5 mm)Light mailers and printed outer cartons
B flute single wallAbout 1/8 in (3 mm)Books, apparel and boxed gifts
C flute single wallAbout 5/32 in (4 mm)General packages and mixed orders
BC double wallAbout 1/4 in (7 mm)Heavy, fragile or stacked loads

Can I print on shipping boxes?

Yes. Plain kraft costs least, and many sellers just add a shipping label. If you want your name on the box, we print one color, two color or full color CMYK.

Mailer styles can carry print inside too, so buyers see your message the moment they open the lid. Finishes include uncoated kraft, matte or gloss lamination, spot UV, foil stamping and embossing.

Place your logo and artwork with Design Your Box. Our designers help with layout for free, and you approve a free proof before printing.

A one color logo on kraft is often the best value. It reads clearly and suits a natural, unbleached look.

Should I pick a slotted carton or a mailer?

The slotted carton is the workhorse. It packs fast, handles deep items, and seals with a strip of tape along the seam.

The mailer suits flatter goods and gift orders. It locks shut without tape and looks neat when it lands on a doorstep.

For heavy cases of jars or cans, a double wall slotted carton is usually the safer pick. Read more about regular slotted containers if that style interests you.

Some businesses use both. They ship bulk and wholesale orders in cartons, and send single retail orders in a printed mailer. The same artwork can sit on each, so the two still look like one brand.

Not sure which fits? Send us a photo of your products and how you pack them now. We will recommend whichever style leaves the least empty room.

How should I pack a shipping box?

Good packing matters as much as good board. The goal is to stop the contents from moving, because movement is what breaks things in transit.

Before a big run goes out, test one box. Pack it as usual, shake it, then drop it from knee height onto a soft floor. If anything rattles, add filler or ask us to tighten the size. Our corrugated inserts for boxes can hold items in place.

  • Put heavy items on the bottom and lighter ones on top.
  • Fill empty gaps so nothing slides when you tilt the box.
  • Tape the center seam and both edge seams on slotted cartons.
  • Place the label flat on the largest face, away from seams.
  • Close the flaps without forcing them, since a bulging lid weakens the carton.

What mistakes should I avoid when ordering?

The most common slip is sending outside measurements. The board eats into the space, and the product ends up too tight.

Another is ordering a box much larger than needed. Carriers price by size as well as weight, so empty space adds cost to every package. Our tips on the cheapest way to ship boxes explain how this works.

Last, some buyers choose single wall for goods kept in tall stacks. Will other cartons be stacked on yours? Then ask us about double wall.

How long until my shipping boxes arrive?

Production takes 4 to 6 business days after you approve the proof. Then your order ships with free tracking to any US address and arrives in 2 to 3 business days.

Boxes come flat and bundled, so they take far less shelf room than built cartons. You can keep a few months of supply in a small corner.

Shipping Boxes: questions

12 answers
What is the difference between a shipping box and a mailer?

Shipping box is a general term for any corrugated carton that sends goods out. A mailer is one style, with a hinged lid that locks with tabs.

Can you make shipping boxes in any size?

Yes. Every order is cut to the inside length, width and height you give us, in inches or mm.

Which size do you need for a shipping box, inside or outside?

Send inside measurements. We work out the outer size from the board you pick, so your product fits as planned.

What is the best board for heavy items?

BC double wall, at about 1/4 in (7 mm), is the usual pick for heavy or stacked loads. Lighter packages often do fine in C flute.

Do you sell unprinted shipping boxes?

Yes. Plain kraft is a common order, and you can add a label or printed tape later.

Can you print my logo inside the lid?

Yes, on mailer styles. Inside print comes in one color, two color or full color CMYK.

Do shipping boxes need folding before I pack them?

Yes, a little. Each one ships flat in a bundle to save storage room, and you fold it by hand when you pack.

How much do custom shipping boxes cost?

Pricing is from $0.30 a box. Size, board and print set the exact figure, which we send in your quote by email.

How many business days does a custom shipping box order take to make?

Production runs 4 to 6 business days after proof approval. Shipping then takes 2 to 3 business days.

Do you ship shipping boxes to every US address?

Yes. We send tracked shipping to any US address at no charge, so you only enter your zip code.

Will I see a proof before my boxes are printed?

Yes. You get a free design proof, and nothing goes to print until you approve it.

What happens if a shipping box order has a misprint or arrives crushed?

Report it within 10 days and attach photos. We will reprint the order or refund you.
