Quick answer

What are chipboard dividers?

Chipboard dividers are slotted strips of thin paperboard that interlock to form a grid inside a box. Each cell holds one small item upright, like a vial, tube or dropper bottle. The walls are so thin that more cells fit in the same space than with fluted board.

Key facts

  • Thin board, more cells per box
  • Kraft or white paperboard
  • Tight grids of small cells
  • Slots together by hand
  • From $0.30 a box

What are chipboard dividers?

They are partitions cut from thin, flat paperboard instead of fluted corrugated. Every strip has slots that run partway down its height. Long strips cross short ones, and the whole grid stands up on its own.

Thin walls waste very little space. A box that fits a coarse 6 × 6 corrugated grid can often take a much tighter chipboard grid.

This item belongs to our packing supplies and inserts range, alongside other ways to organize what goes inside a box.

Who buys chipboard dividers?

Anyone who packs many small, light items upright in one box. Each item needs its own space so it cannot roll or clink against the next.

Teachers and hobby clubs use them too. A gridded box keeps paint pots or seed packets sorted between sessions.

  • Clinics and labs storing sample vials and test tubes
  • Etsy sellers shipping 10 ml dropper bottles
  • Nail and beauty brands packing small polish bottles
  • Craft stores sorting beads, buttons and thread spools
  • Machine shops keeping small fittings apart
  • Subscription brands sending sample sets

Chipboard or corrugated dividers, which should I choose?

Item weight decides it. Thin paperboard suits light items in boxes that will not be dropped from height. Heavier glass, such as jars or full-size bottles, needs fluted board. For that job, see our fluted corrugated box dividers.

How do I measure for a chipboard grid?

Start inside the box. Begin at the floor and note its inside length and width, then take the inside height. Our guide on how to measure a box shows the common slips.

Next, measure one item at its widest point. For a round bottle, that is the body or the cap, whichever is larger. Add about 1/8 in so it drops in without force.

Multiply that cell size by the cells in each row and check the total against your box. Then choose a grid height. A full-height grid steadies tall bottles. A shorter grid leaves caps showing, so items are easy to pick out.

Should I pick kraft or white paperboard?

Kraft has a warm brown look and hides scuffs. It suits storage drawers, shop shelves and trade packs that get handled often.

White paperboard looks clean and clinical. It works well for lab samples, skincare sets and gift boxes, where the grid is the first thing seen on opening. Handwritten cell numbers also read clearly on it.

Both boards fold neatly at the slots and lie flat in the bundle. If the grid sees daily use, choose kraft. If it is mostly seen once at unboxing, white usually looks better.

Can chipboard dividers be printed?

Most grids stay plain, because the products carry the display. Print makes sense when the grid is part of the unboxing or the storage system.

We print one color, two color or full color CMYK on the strips. A popular choice is a row of letters and numbers along the top edge so every cell has an address. How do I assemble a divider grid?

Each order ships flat, as a bundle of long strips and short strips. The first grid takes a few minutes, and the rest go much faster.

  1. Stand the long strips up with their slots facing upward.
  2. Hold each short strip with its slots facing downward.
  3. Press the short strips onto the long ones where the slots meet.
  4. Push every crossing all the way down so the top edge sits level.
  5. Lower the finished grid into the box and seat it against the base.

How do I pack small items so they stay put?

Fill the outer cells first. They take the knocks when a carton is handled, and a full outer ring keeps the grid square.

For tall bottles, lay a flat sheet of card over the tops before closing the lid. It stops bottles from lifting out if the box is turned upside down. A thin bed of crinkle paper shred for cushioning under the grid adds a little more protection.

Pack one test box before a full run. Shake it, flip it and reopen it. If an item has shifted or a wall has bowed, adjust the cell size or board.

What mistakes should I avoid with chipboard dividers?

The most common error is measuring the bottle body and forgetting the cap. A bottle can slide into a cell by its body and still jam at the shoulder.

Another is asking thin paperboard to hold heavy glass. If one filled cell feels heavy in your hand, move to corrugated.

Last, people forget that the walls take up room. Their thickness adds to the overall grid size, so give us your item size and we will work out the totals.

Can you fit a grid to a box I already use?

Yes, and many orders begin this way. Your current box works, but the items rattle around inside. Send the inside size and we cut a grid that drops straight in.

If you are still choosing a box, size both at once. A mailer box made with an insert lets the cell rows meet the walls exactly, with no gap at the edges.

Once you like the result, keep the box size and grid layout on file. Reorders then move quickly, since the details are settled.

Chipboard Dividers: questions

12 answers
How are chipboard and corrugated dividers different?

Chipboard is thin flat paperboard, so more cells fit in a box. Corrugated uses fluted board and cushions heavier items better.

How many cells can one grid have?

From a single short row up to dense layouts like 10 × 10. Your box size and item size set the limit.

Will chipboard dividers hold glass?

Small, light glass like vials and dropper bottles sits well in them. Bigger or heavier glass is safer in corrugated dividers.

Can you supply the box too?

Yes. We can quote the grid alone or fitted to a matching mailer or lidded box made to size.

Do the dividers arrive assembled?

No. They ship as flat slotted strips and lock together by hand. Shipping flat also keeps the bundle compact.

Is white paperboard available?

Yes. White gives a clean look for lab samples, skincare and gift sets. Kraft is the other option.

Can the grid be shorter than my box?

Yes. A lower grid leaves caps and labels visible, so items lift out more easily.

Can you print numbers on the cells?

Yes. We can print letters or numbers along the strip edges so every cell has its own reference.

What measurements do you need?

The box's inside length, width and height in inches, plus the widest point of one item, cap included.

Are they good for storing small parts?

Yes. They keep screws, fittings, beads and similar parts sorted in one drawer or box.

Will I see a proof before production?

Yes. You get a free design proof of the grid layout, and we only cut after you approve it.

When will my chipboard dividers be made and delivered?

Cutting and production run 4–6 business days once you approve the grid proof. Your bundles then go out by free tracked US shipping, arriving in 2–3 business days.
