Quick answer
What are small cardboard boxes?
Small cardboard boxes are compact boxes, usually 8 in or less on the longest side. They hold items like rings, lip balm, soap bars and spare parts. Most use thin E flute or kraft folding board, and since each box is cut to your size, the product fits with little or no filler.

What makes a cardboard box small?
Most buyers mean a box that fits in one hand. In practice that is about 8 in or less on the longest side.
Picture a ring, a lip balm set, a bar of soap or a bag of screws. At this scale, an eighth of an inch decides whether the product fits well or rattles.
Every box on this page is cut to the inside length, width and height you send. Nothing is pulled from a stock size list.
Which businesses order small boxes?
Small boxes suit products that are light but worth protecting. Etsy and Shopify sellers order them most, along with subscription brands that pack several minis in one shipment.
Some customers also need slim, flat shapes for mail. For those, read about our small mailing boxes for slim packages and compare the two.
- Jewelry and watch sellers
- Candle, soap and wax melt makers
- Skincare and cosmetics brands
- Parts suppliers and repair shops
- Offices sending samples, pins and swag
Which small box style should I pick?
Each style opens a different way. Choose based on whether the box ships alone, rides inside a bigger carton or sits on a shelf.
| Style | Board | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Roll end mailer | E flute corrugated | Ships on its own and opens like a lid |
| Tuck end carton | Kraft or white paperboard | Shelf display or inside a larger carton |
| Cube box | Paperboard or E flute | Candles, mugs and gift items |
| Small slotted box | E flute or B flute | Parts, refills and bulk packs |
How do I measure a small product for a box?
Small items are easy to measure slightly wrong. Half an inch of error on a 2 in ring box is a big share of the whole box.
Use a ruler or calipers instead of a soft tape. The guide to measuring a box shows the most common slips.
- Measure the product with its pouch, wrap or tissue on.
- Write down length, width and height in inches.
- Add about 1/8 in on each side so it slides in easily.
- If you want an insert, note how deep it is.
- Send us the inside size. We handle the board thickness.
Is thin board better for small boxes?
Usually, yes. Thin board folds cleanly around tight corners, so E flute and paperboard are the common picks. A thick flute can look chunky on a box the size of a coffee mug.
E flute gives crisp edges and decent protection when the box ships alone. If the small box rides inside a bigger carton, paperboard is often enough.
The corrugated flute guide compares each option side by side.
Can I print on a small box?
Yes, and it pays off here. A small box is often the one customers keep on a dresser or desk.
Pick one color, two color or full color CMYK. Print can go inside and outside. See our custom printed boxes for branding for more on artwork.
- A one color logo on kraft keeps a natural, handmade look.
- A full color pattern inside the lid makes unboxing memorable.
- Black board with gold foil suits jewelry and gifts.
- Matte lamination gives white board a soft, smooth feel.
- Spot UV makes a logo shine on a dark background.
Should I choose kraft, white or black board?
Color sets the mood before the lid lifts. Brown kraft reads as natural, which fits candles, soap and refill packs. It also hides scuffs on boxes that get handled a lot.
White board gives bright ink and sharp detail. It works for skincare, accessories and any logo with fine lines. Fingerprints show more easily, so many buyers add matte or gloss lamination.
Black board feels formal and premium. It is a favorite for watches, jewelry and gifts, and foil stamping stands out on it.
How do I keep small items from shifting?
A snug box handles most of the problem. For loose or fragile pieces, add an insert. A slotted card insert can hold a ring, a lipstick or a flash drive in one spot.
Our corrugated inserts for small items can be cut to match your layout.
If you pack several small boxes into one carton, set them in tight rows. Gaps let boxes slide and scuff corners. A sheet of card between layers keeps them apart.
What mistakes should I avoid with small boxes?
The most common one is measuring a bare product. A candle that fits alone may not fit once it is in a pouch. Always measure it as it will be packed.
Another is choosing heavy board for a tiny box. Corners turn soft and round, and the box gains bulk with no benefit.
The last is a lid that is hard to open. A thumb notch fixes that for small hands.

Small Cardboard Boxes: questions
12 answersHow small can your cardboard boxes get?
We cut boxes to the size you send. Very small boxes, under about 2 in, often work better in paperboard than in corrugated.
Is E flute strong enough for a small shipped box?
For light items like jewelry, cosmetics or candles, E flute usually works well. It gives clean corners and good crush resistance at small sizes.
Can I get small boxes in black?
Yes. We can print the board black outside, inside or both. Black boxes pair nicely with foil stamping.
Can a small box include an insert?
Yes. A card or corrugated insert can hold one item or several pieces in their own slots. Share the item sizes when you ask for a quote.
Do small boxes need tape to close?
No tape is needed for roll end mailers or tuck end cartons, because folding flaps hold them shut. Small slotted boxes usually need a strip.
Can you print inside a small box?
Yes, for mailers and tuck end cartons. A short message or pattern under the lid looks good at this size.
Should I measure the product with its packaging?
Yes. Measure it exactly as it will be packed, including any pouch or tissue. Then add about 1/8 in on each side.
Can I order more than one small size?
Yes. Many customers order two or three sizes together. Each size gets its own proof so you can check them one at a time.
Which finishes work on small boxes?
You can choose from matte lamination, gloss lamination, spot UV, foil stamping and embossing. Foil and embossing look sharp on small lids.
How much do small cardboard boxes cost?
Pricing starts from $0.30 a box. Your emailed quote gives the exact figure for your size, board, print and quantity.
Do small boxes arrive already folded?
No, they arrive flat in bundles. That keeps shipping compact and makes them easy to store until you need them.
How are small boxes different from small mailing boxes?
Any use is covered by small boxes, from cubes to cartons to mailers. Small mailing boxes focus on slim shapes built for mail.
