Quick answer

What are book shipping boxes?

Book shipping boxes are corrugated cartons sized around one book or a stack. A snug fit keeps the load from sliding, which is what bends corners and cracks spines. Your inside measurements set the size, and the board can be plain kraft or printed.

What is a book shipping box?

It is a corrugated carton cut to hold a book, or a stack of books, with almost no gap. Books are dense for their size. When one slides around in a loose carton, the corners take the hit.

We build two common shapes. One is a flat-folding flap carton that opens from the top. The other is a slim, tall printed box that holds a single title upright.

Both use fluted board instead of thin card. The wavy layer between the liners absorbs knocks and resists crushing when packages pile up in a truck. See our corrugated boxes made to size for the wider range.

Who buys custom boxes for books?

Mostly people who ship books every week and want them to arrive looking new. Readers spot a bent corner right away, so the box matters more here than with many products.

Collectors are the toughest audience. A first edition with a creased jacket loses much of its appeal, so dealers often use a fitted box for every listing.

  • Independent bookstores with an online shop
  • Self-published authors mailing signed copies
  • Small presses sending review copies
  • Subscription clubs with a monthly pick
  • Used and rare book dealers on Etsy and eBay
  • Schools and libraries moving stock between buildings

What is the right way to size a box for a book?

Measure the book itself, not the box you use today. Take the tall edge, the width across the cover and the spine thickness. For a stack, measure the stack as it will sit in the carton.

Then add a small allowance so the book slides in without force. Our guide to taking inside box measurements explains inside versus outside sizes.

  1. Measure the length along the spine edge, in inches.
  2. Measure the width across the front cover.
  3. Measure the depth: one spine, or the full stack.
  4. Add 1/8 to 3/16 in to length and width.
  5. Add extra depth for tissue paper or a card on top.
  6. Send us those inside sizes with your request.

Which board should I pick for books?

Weight drives the choice more than size does. One paperback is light, so thin E flute keeps the package slim. Hardcovers and stacks call for thicker walls.

Not sure about one layer of fluting or two? Our comparison of single wall and double wall boards shows where each one fits.

What you shipSuggested boardWhy
One paperbackE flute, about 1/16 inSlim, light and prints cleanly
One hardcoverB flute, about 1/8 inGuards the hard cover corners
Three to six booksC flute, about 5/32 inExtra cushion for a heavier box
Boxed sets or bulk ordersBC double wall, about 1/4 inKeeps its shape under stacking

Should the box fit tight around the book?

Yes, as snug as you can manage while the book still goes in. Empty space lets a book pick up speed inside the package. A close fit lets the box absorb the bump instead of the cover.

If your titles vary, size the box for the biggest book in the group. Fill leftover room with a folded corrugated pad or crumpled kraft paper so smaller books stay put.

Depth matters too. A box that is too tall lets the book lift and drop each time it is flipped. Match the depth to the spine thickness and add only what the wrap needs.

Can I print my store logo on a book box?

Print can be plain, one color, two color or full color CMYK. Many stores print a simple logo on kraft, which looks bookish and keeps things affordable. Publishers often choose full color to echo a cover or series.

Inside print suits book clubs. A short line under the flaps, like this month's title, makes opening the box part of the read. Lay it out in Design Your Box before you ask for a quote.

  • Uncoated kraft for a natural, plain look
  • Matte lamination for a soft printed surface
  • Gloss lamination where colors need to pop
  • Spot UV or foil stamping on a logo
  • Embossing for a raised name on a gift box

How do I pack books so they arrive undamaged?

Lay books flat, never standing on the spine. In a stack, the heaviest book goes on the bottom. Keep dust jackets on, and slip a sheet of paper over glossy covers to prevent scuffs.

For a single title in a tall box, slide it in spine first so the open edge faces the top flaps. Tape the center seam, then both end seams.

Signed copies need one more step. Wrap the book in a paper sleeve so the ink on the title page cannot rub. Small gaps can be filled with corrugated inserts for loose gaps.

What mistakes damage books in transit?

Boxes that are oversized or too thin cause most of the damage. These are the errors we hear about most from sellers.

  • Using one oversized stock box for every order
  • Picking thin board for a stack of hardcovers
  • Standing books on their spines in the carton
  • Leaving loose space at the ends of the box
  • Measuring the old box instead of the book

Is a box better than a padded mailer?

Usually yes, once the book is thicker than a slim paperback. A padded bag flexes, so hardcover corners can punch through or fold. A box holds its shape when other packages sit on top.

Bags still make sense for zines, pamphlets and thin trade editions. Many sellers use both. If you want to compare, browse padded paper mailers for thin titles.

The box carries your print too. That turns a plain package into a small ad for your store.

Can you make boxes for a series or boxed set?

Yes. A boxed set needs a carton sized around the whole set, with room for any slipcase. We can match print across several sizes so a series looks consistent on the doorstep.

If you ship sets next to single titles, ordering two or three sizes together is common. Every order then has a box that fits.

Bulk orders between stores usually need plain cartons. Our corrugated and shipping box range covers those.

Book Shipping Boxes: questions

12 answers
What size box does a paperback need?

A trade paperback often fits a box around 8 × 5.5 × 1.5 in inside. Send the real book size and we will cut the box to it.

Is single wall strong enough for hardcovers?

For one or two hardcovers, B or C flute single wall usually does well. For heavy stacks or boxed sets, BC double wall is the safer pick.

Is a slim box possible for a single book?

Yes. With E flute the box stays thin and the corners are still guarded. It suits paperbacks and slim hardcovers.

Do the boxes arrive flat?

Yes, every box ships flat. You fold it by hand and close the flaps with tape.

Can I print a note inside the flaps?

Yes, inside print is an option. Book clubs often print the monthly pick or a short thank-you there.

How do I stop books from sliding?

Order the box close to the book size. To keep things from shifting, pack any leftover space with paper or a corrugated pad.

Can I order several sizes for different titles?

Yes. Many stores order two or three sizes together. Each size gets its own proof.

What print suits a small bookstore?

A one color logo on kraft is simple and clear. Full color CMYK suits publishers who want to echo a cover or series.

Can you add foil to a book box?

Yes, foil stamping is one of our finishes. It looks sharp on a store name or a series title.

How fast are book boxes made?

Boxes are made in 4–6 business days once you sign off on the proof. Tracked shipping then takes 2–3 business days.

What if my book boxes arrive misprinted?

Send photos within 10 days of finding a misprint, damage or defect. We reprint or refund the affected boxes.

Can you ship boxes straight to an author's home?

Yes. Give us any US address and the boxes go there tracked, with no shipping charge.
