What are molded pulp boxes made of?
Molded pulp starts as paper fiber mixed into water. That slurry is drawn onto a shaped form, pressed flat and dried until it turns firm.
The finished box is one solid piece. Because it is formed instead of folded, it can follow curves, steps and raised edges that flat board cannot.
A pocket can hug a phone, a perfume bottle or a coffee pod almost exactly. You will find these trays and boxes in our packing supplies and inserts range.
Which businesses use molded pulp packaging?
Pulp has moved far beyond the egg carton. Sellers pick it when a product needs a fitted, cushioned home and a natural paper look.
The common thread is an awkward shape. A round or tapered item rattles inside a square box, and a formed pocket fixes that without foam.
- Shopify stores selling electronics with a charger and cable
- Coffee roasters packing pods or sample bags
- Skincare brands shipping glass droppers and jars
- Candle makers who send fragile glass vessels
- Etsy sellers with boxed gift sets
- Subscription brands that fill one tray each month
Which pulp box style should I choose?
Your choice depends on whether the pulp is the whole retail pack or an inner layer inside a bigger carton.
| Style | How it closes | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Hinged clamshell | Lid joins the base and snaps shut | Pods, small gadgets, samples |
| Two piece lidded box | A separate lid slips over the base | Retail packs with a printed sleeve |
| Fitted tray | No lid; sits inside an outer box | Bottles and devices inside a mailer |
| End caps | Two shaped caps cradle each end | Long items in a shipping carton |
How do I give you my product measurements?
Pulp is formed tightly around the item, so accurate numbers matter. Find the widest point of your product in each direction, so we have how long, how wide and how tall it is. Note any caps, buttons or curves.
Photos help a lot. Shoot the top, the side and the end, with a ruler visible in each shot. Our designers use them to place pockets, ribs and finger notches.
If several items share one tray, sketch the layout you want on paper. For basics, read our guide to measuring a box.
Should I pick natural or white pulp?
Natural pulp is a soft beige with a slightly rough feel. It looks earthy and honest, which suits coffee, plants and handmade goods.
White pulp is smoother and cleaner. From a short distance it can pass for ceramic. It works well for skincare, tech and premium gifts.
Think about the sleeve too. Kraft tones sit nicely on natural fiber. Bright, crisp artwork usually looks better over white.
How do I put my logo and colors on a pulp box?
Textured fiber soaks up ink and softens fine detail. So the usual answer is a printed paper sleeve or band that wraps around the box.
Sleeves and labels can be plain, one color, two color or full color CMYK. Matte or gloss lamination, spot UV, foil stamping and embossing are all options.
A simple logo can also be pressed into the lid, which leaves a quiet raised mark with no ink. Place your artwork in Design Your Box and our designers will check the layout and send a free proof.
How do I pack products into a pulp tray?
The tray does most of the protecting, so packing can be quick. Follow these steps for steady results.
- Wipe away any dust and confirm the pulp is dry.
- Press each product all the way into its pocket until it sits level.
- Close the lid or set the top tray over the items.
- Slide on the sleeve, or stick the label across the seam.
- For shipping, place the pulp pack inside a snug outer box.
Can I ship a molded pulp box on its own?
Pulp is sturdy, but its surface scuffs easily in a busy sorting hub. It also has no space for a shipping label.
Most brands slip the pulp pack into a corrugated outer. The pulp holds the product while the outer box takes the knocks. We can size a matching mailer box made to your size so both parts arrive together.
Is a pulp tray better than a corrugated insert?
Both hold goods in place, but they shine in different jobs. A corrugated insert is cut from flat board. It handles straight sides and simple openings well, and it takes print sharply.
Pulp follows curves. A round bottle, a phone with a camera bump or a tapered jar sits more snugly in a formed pocket. The fiber also gives slightly under a bump, which helps glass.
If your items are boxy, try a die cut corrugated insert for boxes. If the shape is curved or fragile, pulp usually wins. Send photos and we will suggest the better fit.
What can go wrong with pulp packaging?
The biggest risk is changing the product after the shape is set. Pockets are formed to one size, so a new bottle may not fit. Lock in the final product first.
Moisture is next. Pulp is paper and softens when it stays wet. Store stock somewhere dry, off the floor.
Last, some buyers expect bright print straight on the fiber. Plan on a sleeve or label for sharp color.
Tell us where your current packaging fails. If bottle necks crack or one corner scuffs, say so, and we can deepen a pocket or add a rib.

Molded Pulp Boxes: questions
12 answersWhat are molded pulp boxes made from?
They are made from paper fiber mixed with water, drawn onto a form, pressed and dried until firm.
Can the pulp be shaped to fit my product?
Yes. Pockets, ribs and steps are formed around your item so it sits snugly with little movement.
What colors does molded pulp come in?
We make natural beige pulp and a smoother white pulp.
Can you print directly on molded pulp?
Detailed print works best on a paper sleeve or label. A simple logo can be pressed into the lid instead.
What is a pulp clamshell?
It is a single piece with a hinged lid joined to the base, so it folds shut over the product.
Can I put a pulp tray inside a mailer box?
Yes. A fitted tray inside a corrugated mailer is a common way to ship fragile goods.
Is molded pulp good for glass bottles?
Yes. The pocket grips the bottle, and the fiber cushions it against light bumps.
What do you need to quote my order?
Send product sizes, a few photos with a ruler, the style you want and your quantity.
What if my product changes after I order?
Pockets are formed to one shape, so a new size usually needs a new design. Settle the product first.
How do the boxes arrive?
They arrive nested in stacks, ready for you to fill.
Can I check the pocket layout and sleeve artwork before my pulp boxes are made?
Yes. Before anything is made, you get a free proof that shows the pocket layout and any sleeve artwork.
How long does a pulp box order take?
Production takes 4–6 business days after proof approval. Free tracked shipping then takes 2–3 business days.
