What are cardboard cylinder boxes?
A cylinder box is a tube with one end sealed and a lid that fits over the other. We build it by rolling paperboard layers around a form, then covering the outside with a smooth paper that holds ink well.
Some tubes include a short inner collar. The lid slips over it and lands flush against the body, which feels neat when a customer opens it.
These sit in our complete cardboard box collection next to square and rectangular styles. Unlike most of those, a cylinder is a rigid shape that ships already formed.
Who buys cylinder boxes?
A round pack looks different from the square boxes crowding most shelves. It also hugs round products, so you waste less space in the corners.
Customers tend to hang on to a good tube. It ends up holding pens, spices or craft supplies long after the first product is gone.
- Tea and coffee roasters filling a tube with a sealed inner bag
- Candle makers boxing a round jar in a round shell
- Skincare brands packing balms, scrubs and serums
- Etsy and Shopify artists sending rolled prints
- Bakers and candy shops selling gift tubes for holidays and birthdays
How do I measure for a cylinder box?
We size cylinders by inside diameter and inside height. Measure your product at its widest point for the diameter. Then measure its full height, including any cap.
Add about 1/8 in to the diameter so the product slides in without scraping. Add a little to the height as well if a tissue pad or card disc will sit on top.
For rolled posters, roll the sheet loosely first and measure the roll. A tight roll is hard to pull out and can crease. This short guide to measuring boxes explains inside versus outside dimensions.
Which lid style fits my product?
The lid decides how the tube feels in a customer's hand. These are the styles buyers ask about most.
| Lid style | How it closes | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Full slip-over lid | Lid covers a deep section of the body | Tea, snacks, gift sets |
| Lid over inner collar | Lid meets the body in a flush line | Skincare, candles, premium gifts |
| Lid on raised neck | Short lid rests on a stepped neck | Tall bottles and jars |
| Shallow end cap | Short cap covers the open end | Long tubes for rolled posters |
Can cylinder boxes be printed?
Yes. We print the outer wrap flat and then roll it onto the tube, so your artwork can run all the way around. There is no seam across the front panel.
Choose plain, one color, two color or full color CMYK. A one color logo on bare kraft is a popular, honest look for tea and soap. White or fully printed tubes suit gifts and skincare.
Want more shine or texture? Choose embossing, foil stamping, spot UV, or a matte or gloss lamination. For a wider look at artwork choices, see our custom printed box options.
Are cylinder boxes safe for food?
Many food sellers use tubes for dry goods like tea, beans, candy and spices. The usual setup is a sealed inner bag that sits inside the tube.
That keeps the board clean and the contents fresh. It also means a customer can refill and reuse the tube.
Tell us what goes inside when you ask for a quote, and we will suggest how to set up the interior. If you only need a plain, unprinted tube, look at plain kraft paper tubes as well.
Can I ship a cylinder box?
A short, wide cylinder is a presentation pack. Put it inside a shipping carton and pad the space around it, because a round shape rolls and shifts.
Long, slim tubes for posters behave differently. Their rolled walls resist crushing along the length, so they often travel well alone.
If your artwork must stay flat, skip the tube and try flat art print shipping boxes instead.
How do I pack a cylinder box?
A round sticker across the lid seam works as a simple seal. Customers can tell at a glance that nobody has opened the tube.
- Remove the lid and check that the inside is clean and dry.
- Place a tissue or card disc in the bottom if the item is fragile.
- Lower the product in upright, or slide in a bag of loose goods.
- Add a second disc or tissue on top if there is empty space.
- Press the lid down slowly so trapped air can escape.
What mistakes happen with cylinder orders?
The most common error is measuring the base of a bottle instead of its widest point. A wide shoulder needs a tube sized to the shoulder.
Another is a lid that fits too tightly. On a tall tube it can trap air and push back when you close it.
Placing a logo on the seam line is a third slip. Keep key text away from the join, and our designers will flag it on your proof.
Loose products also rattle in a roomy tube, so ask about corrugated inserts for snug fits when you order.
How long does an order take?
You get a free design proof first, showing the wrap laid flat with the seam marked. After you approve it, production takes 4–6 business days.
Free tracked shipping to any US address then takes 2–3 business days. Tubes arrive formed, so they take more room than flat cartons. Details are on our shipping information page.

Cardboard Cylinder Boxes: questions
12 answersHow are cylinder boxes measured?
By inside diameter and inside height. Measure your product at its widest point and its full height, then add a small allowance.
How does the inner collar work on a cylinder box?
It is a short inner sleeve fixed above the base. The lid slides over it and closes flush with the body.
Can a cylinder box be printed all the way around?
Yes. The outer wrap is printed flat before it is rolled on, so artwork can cover the whole circumference.
Do cylinder boxes ship flat?
No. They are rigid tubes, so they arrive formed and ready to fill. Plan for extra storage space.
Can I use a cylinder box for coffee beans?
Yes. Seal the beans in an inner bag first, then place the bag in the tube.
Will a long tube protect a rolled poster?
Long, slim tubes handle shipping well because the rolled walls resist crushing. Roll the print loosely so it slides out easily.
Can the inside be white while the outside is kraft?
Yes. Inside print is available, so the interior can be white or a contrast color against natural kraft.
Is foil stamping available for a logo on a round tube?
Yes. Foil is applied to the wrap before rolling, so the logo sits cleanly on the curve.
Where does the seam go on the wrap?
Our designers place it at the back of the tube, away from your main artwork and logo.
Can a short cylinder ship on its own?
Short presentation tubes are better packed inside a padded outer carton. Long poster tubes can often ship alone.
How is a cylinder box different from a round box?
A cylinder is usually taller than it is wide. A round box tends to be shallow, like a hat box or cake box.
How long does a cylinder box order take?
Production takes 4–6 business days after proof approval. Free tracked shipping then takes 2–3 business days.
