What are corrugated box dividers?

They are flat strips of corrugated board with slots cut along them. Each strip locks into the strips running across it.

Once slotted together, the strips make a grid that stands upright inside a carton. Every product gets its own cell.

Grids can be a few cells or a few dozen. We can also cut a punched holder with round holes for small vials.

Who uses box dividers?

Any seller packing several matching items into one carton gets value from dividers. They matter most for glass and anything that scratches.

They also speed up the packing bench. Staff drop each item into a cell instead of wrapping it by hand.

  • Craft breweries and distilleries sending bottle sets
  • Etsy candle makers shipping jars in groups
  • Shopify food brands packing sauces, honey and preserves
  • Subscription box companies sorting mixed samples
  • Warehouses and repair shops organizing parts and fasteners

Which divider layout fits my products?

The right layout depends on what you pack and how it is shaped. This table lists the options we cut most often.

How do I measure for box dividers?

Begin with the inside length, width and height of the carton. If we are making the box too, we size both at once.

Next, measure the widest part of one product. Add about 1/8 in so each item drops in without forcing.

Count the board between cells. A row of four cells has three inner walls, so B flute adds roughly 3/8 in to the row.

Our guide to measuring a box from the inside shows where to place the tape.

Which flute should the dividers use?

Sample bottles and light parts work well in E flute, about 1/16 in thick. It is slim, so cells stay roomy.

Jars and standard bottles do better in B flute (about 1/8 in) or C flute (about 5/32 in). The walls are firmer and resist bending.

Heavy bottles, such as wine, suit BC double wall at about 1/4 in. It cushions as well as separates, and it pairs nicely with a double wall outer carton.

The dividers do not need to match the outer box. Single wall grids inside a double wall carton are a common mix.

Not sure? Send a photo and the weight of one item. We will suggest a flute in your quote.

Should I print on my dividers?

Most buyers leave dividers plain kraft, since they sit out of sight and exist to protect.

Printing makes sense when the grid is visible on opening, such as a gift set or a tasting kit. We print one color, two color or full color CMYK, and white board gives a clean backdrop.

Lamination, foil and similar finishes are rarely worth it here. Put that budget into the outer carton, for example custom printed boxes.

A small printed number in each cell is a handy middle path. It helps packers fill mixed sets in the right order.

How do I pack a divider grid?

Slot the grid together on a flat table, then lower it into the carton as one piece. Building it inside the box often bends a strip.

Fill the corner cells with the heaviest items first. That keeps the carton balanced while you work toward the center.

Tape one filled example near the packing station. New hires can copy it without asking questions.

If a bottle neck rises above the grid, wrap it with a sheet of paper. Close the box and give it a gentle shake to listen for rattles.

What mistakes cause a poor divider fit?

Most problems come from a few measuring slips that are easy to avoid.

  • Measuring the outside of the carton instead of the inside
  • Cutting cells to the exact product size, so items jam
  • Choosing E flute for heavy glass
  • Making walls lower than the bottle shoulder, so necks touch
  • Skipping a pad under heavy items at the bottom

Can I order dividers without boxes?

Yes. If you already stock cartons, send the inside size and we will cut grids to match.

Measure two or three cartons from different lots. Sizes can drift slightly between runs, and the grid should fit the tightest one.

Plenty of customers order both together because it removes guesswork. A carton with a built-in grid is also a smart way to ship sets, and mailer boxes with fitted inserts cover that style.

How do dividers protect glass?

Most bottle breakage starts when glass strikes glass. A divider wall between neighbors stops that contact.

Corrugated board also flexes a little. When the carton takes a bump, the flutes absorb part of the knock.

The grid braces the side walls too. A full carton holds its shape better when stacked under others in a standard shipping box run.

For extra safety, lay a sheet of board under the grid at the base.

Corrugated Box Dividers: questions

12 answers
What else are box dividers called?

People also say partitions, cell grids or bottle separators. All mean slotted strips that form compartments inside a carton.

Can you cut dividers for cartons I already have?

Yes. Send the inside length, width and height in inches and we will cut a grid to fit.

What is the fewest cells a corrugated divider can have?

The smallest grid has two cells. Most orders use 3, 6, 12 or 16 cells, and larger grids are possible.

Which board suits wine bottles?

BC double wall, about 1/4 in thick, handles heavy glass well and adds cushioning.

Do the dividers arrive already assembled?

No. They ship flat and slot together by hand in a few seconds.

Can the dividers be shorter than the box?

Yes. Low grids suit short items. For bottles, keep the walls above the shoulder.

Can you print on corrugated dividers?

Yes, in one color, two color or full color CMYK. It is most useful when the grid shows in a gift set.

Can I buy the box and dividers together?

Yes. We size them as a pair so the fit is right the first time.

Will dividers work in a mailer box?

Yes. A grid inside a mailer suits candles, jars and sample sets sent to customers.

Is there a holder for tiny vials?

Yes. A punched corrugated holder with round holes grips vials and small bottles.

What do box dividers cost?

Pricing starts from $0.30 a box. We email the exact figure in your quote within one business day.

What if the dividers do not fit?

Email photos within 10 days. If they were cut wrong or arrived damaged, we reprint or refund.
