What counts as a large cardboard box?

Most buyers use the word large once one side passes about 18 in. Past that point you lift the box with two hands, not one.

Nearly all of ours are regular slotted cartons. Four flaps fold shut on top, four on the base, and tape holds them. Compare your length against the usual stock carton size ranges to see where your box lands.

Who buys large boxes made to size?

Movers and storage companies order them by the hundred. So do Etsy and Shopify sellers who ship pillows, bedding, lamps or pet beds. Restaurants and offices use them for bulk supplies and file storage.

Fit matters more as the box grows. A carton 4 in too tall wastes space on every shelf and pallet. If your orders go package carrier, also look at our shipping boxes for package orders.

Which board suits oversized cartons: single or double wall?

Large panels flex more than small ones, so board choice matters. Use this table as a starting point, then compare both wall types in detail if you are unsure.

BoardThicknessChoose it when
B flute single wallAbout 1/8 in (3 mm)The load is light and boxes stay on the floor
C flute single wallAbout 5/32 in (4 mm)The load is bulky, but not dense
BC double wallAbout 1/4 in (7 mm)The load is dense, or boxes stack high

How do I measure for a large box?

Small errors add up on big cartons. A half inch of extra room on every side can mean several wasted cubic feet. Our guide to measuring a box covers the details.

  1. Measure your item at its widest, longest and tallest points.
  2. Add room for padding, often 1 in per side.
  3. Write the result as length × width × height, in inches.
  4. Check that the finished box fits your doors, shelves or truck.
  5. Send us those inside measurements.

Which sizes work for moving and storage?

Use a mix of sizes. Put dense things like books and hand hardware in the smaller cartons. Save the biggest ones for pillows, linens and lampshades.

If a packed box feels heavy to lift, it is too big for that load. For long-term shelves and garages, see our cardboard storage boxes for shelving.

Pick two or three sizes and stick with them. Matching boxes stack in straight columns, which keeps the pile steadier.

Can large boxes have hand holes and print?

Yes to both. We die cut hand holes into the short ends, so you can grip the box without hugging it. Use double wall around the holes when the contents are dense.

Print goes on one, two or all four sides. Use Design Your Box to place a logo where you want it. Our designers will help with layout, and you see a free proof before anything is printed.

  • Room names and a contents line for movers
  • Size words like Small, Medium or Large
  • Arrows, fragile marks and handling icons
  • Your logo on two or four sides
  • A blank panel for handwritten notes

How should I pack and tape a large box?

Most failures start at the base. Run one strip of tape down the center seam and one across each short edge. Repeat on top once the box is full.

Fill the box so nothing moves, but do not let the flaps bulge. Crumpled paper or soft goods work well for gaps. Shake the sealed box gently. If you hear shifting, open it and add more filler.

What mistakes should I avoid with large boxes?

The first is loading dense goods into a huge carton. The base takes the strain, and the box is hard to carry. Split heavy items across smaller boxes.

The second is using single wall at the bottom of a tall stack. Choose double wall for that spot. The third is storing the flat bundles in a damp room.

If one carton holds several loose items, corrugated dividers for separating items keep them from rubbing together.

Large Cardboard Boxes: questions

12 answers
What size is a large cardboard box?

Most people mean a carton longer than about 18 in. We make large boxes to any inside size you send.

Should a large box be double wall?

Choose BC double wall for dense contents or tall stacks. Light, bulky goods usually do fine in C flute.

Can a big, heavy carton get die cut grips in the short ends?

Yes. We cut hand holes into the short ends on request. They make an oversized or awkward box easier to lift and carry. Pair them with double wall if the load is dense.

Are these good for moving?

Yes. Many customers order two or three sizes for a move. Keep dense items in the smaller boxes.

Can I print room names on them?

Yes. A room list or contents panel is common. You fill it in by hand while packing.

How do I tape the bottom?

Tape along the center seam, then across both short edges. This keeps the base flaps from opening under load.

Do large boxes arrive built?

No. They arrive flat in bundles, which saves storage space and makes shipping simpler.

Can all four sides be printed?

Yes. We print one, two or all four side panels. Flaps and inside surfaces can be printed too.

How much do large boxes cost?

Pricing starts from $0.30 a box. Your quote by email gives the exact figure for your size and board.

How fast can I get them?

Production takes 4 to 6 business days after you approve the proof. Shipping then takes 2 to 3 business days.

Can I send the inside size of my large box in millimeters?

Yes. Send the length, width and height in inches or millimeters, and we will work from your numbers. The size is confirmed on your proof.

What if boxes arrive damaged?

Email photos within 10 days. We reprint the damaged boxes or refund you.
