What is colored packing tape?

It is regular carton sealing tape with the film made in one solid shade. Rolls come in red, blue, green, yellow, black, white, purple, pink, orange, gray and brown.

There is no artwork on it. The shade is the message, and a packer can read it from across the room.

The color runs through the film instead of sitting on top as ink. The glossy face keeps it bright under warehouse lights.

You will find it with dividers, sheets and paper shred in our packing supplies and inserts collection.

Who buys colored tape?

Anyone who packs many boxes a day and needs a quick signal on each one.

Small sellers use it too. An Etsy shop packing at the kitchen table can tape every checked order in green and skip the second look.

  • Shopify stores marking exchanges, returns and replacement orders
  • Fulfillment centers assigning one shade to each day of the week
  • Movers labeling rooms or owners on every carton
  • Bakeries and gift sellers flagging fragile or rush orders
  • Subscription brands matching the seal to their box color

How do I set up a color code that works?

Keep it small. Three or four shades with clear meanings beat ten that nobody remembers.

Post a short chart above the packing bench so new hires learn it on their first shift.

Do not change a meaning mid-season. A shifted code causes more mix-ups than having no code.

ColorA common meaning
RedFragile, rush or handle with care
GreenInspected and ready to ship
BlueReturns or items headed back for repair
YellowOn hold, awaiting a check or a partial order
BlackDiscreet seal for high value items

What tape width fits my boxes?

Match the roll to your flaps. A 2 in roll covers the center seam of most single wall cartons in one pass.

Use 3 in tape on large flaps and heavier packs. Narrow rolls look cleaner on small boxes.

Check the gap where the outer flaps meet. The tape should overlap each flap by about 3/4 in on both sides.

Still choosing the carton? Our list of standard cardboard box sizes explained helps you decide both at once.

Is colored tape as strong as clear tape?

For everyday orders, yes. The dye is in the film, so the adhesive side works like any carton tape.

Grip depends more on the box surface. Dust, damp and cold board stop tape from bonding, so pack in a dry room.

Press the strip down firmly. Pressure pushes the adhesive into the board fibers.

Heavy contents need an H pattern: one strip on the seam, one across each end. They also need a sturdier carton, such as double wall boxes for heavy contents.

How do I tape a box the right way?

A straight, even seal looks tidy and stays shut. Repeat the same steps on every carton.

Seal the bottom first, before you fill the box. A carton taped only on top can split when someone lifts it.

  1. Fold the small inner flaps down, then the large outer flaps until they meet.
  2. Start the tape about 2 in down one side panel.
  3. Roll the dispenser along the seam without stretching the tape.
  4. Stop 2 in down the opposite side, then cut.
  5. Smooth the strip with your palm so it grips the board.
  6. Add end strips for an H seal on heavy or long haul boxes.

Colored tape or printed tape: which should I pick?

Colored rolls carry one shade and no artwork, so there is no proof step for the tape itself. They suit sorting jobs where the shade does the talking.

If you want a logo or handling note repeating along the seam, look at printed packing tape with your logo. Many shops use printed rolls for customers and colored rolls inside the building.

Stock moving between your own sites is a good fit for plain shades. Only your staff see it, so there is no reason to print.

What mistakes should I avoid?

Most tape trouble starts at the packing bench, not with the roll.

Run a quick refresher every few months so the shades mean the same thing to everyone.

  • Using so many shades that the code loses its meaning
  • Stretching tape while pulling, which makes the ends lift
  • Taping over dust or old labels instead of clean board
  • Choosing a shade that hides the barcode on your shipping label
  • Storing rolls in a cold truck, which leaves the adhesive sluggish

Can the tape match my box color?

Yes. Tell us the color of your printed boxes and we suggest the closest shade in the range.

A close match matters most on boxes customers keep, like gift and retail packs. On plain brown shippers, strong contrast is more useful.

Black tape on a black box gives a clean look. Browse our black cardboard boxes made to size for a pairing many brands like.

How many rolls should I order?

Start from your daily box count. A simple seam on top and bottom uses roughly four times the box length in tape. An H seal uses about double that.

Add a cushion for torn strips and re-taped returns. A spare roll costs less than a stalled shipping day.

With several shades, order more of your everyday color and fewer of the warning ones. Red and yellow rolls usually last the longest.

Colored Packing Tape: questions

12 answers
Which colors of packing tape can I order?

Our photos show red, blue, green, yellow, black, white, purple, pink, orange, gray and brown. Ask if you need a shade near a certain box color.

Can I mix colors in one order?

Yes. List each color with the roll count you want and we quote them together.

Will colored tape fit my current dispenser?

Most hand dispensers take a 2 in roll on a 3 in core. Tell us your dispenser size and we check before quoting.

Is colored tape strong enough for shipping?

Yes, it seals like standard carton tape. Use an H seal on heavy boxes and pick a carton that suits the contents.

Can you print my logo on colored tape?

Plain colored rolls carry no print. For a logo or message, choose our printed packing tape, which gets a free design proof first.

Does colored tape stick to kraft boxes?

Yes. It bonds well to clean, dry kraft and white board.

What color works best for fragile orders?

Red is the usual pick. It stands out on tan cartons and on a busy loading dock.

Will the tape cover my shipping label?

Not if you tape first and label after, or keep the strip clear of the label area. Avoid dark tape over barcodes.

Can I order tape without boxes?

Yes. Ask for rolls alone and we email a quote for the colors and widths you need.

How long does shipping take for tape?

Rolls ship free and tracked, and arrive in 2 to 3 business days at any US address once production is done.

What if a roll arrives crushed?

Send photos within 10 days. We reprint the damaged rolls or refund them.

How should I store spare rolls?

Lay them flat in a dry cupboard at room temperature. Rolls kept somewhere cold or damp are harder to put on a box.
