What are fragile item mailers?
They are mailer boxes built for products that break. The fold-up shape is familiar, but the board, fit and packing plan are chosen around your product's weak points.
A pottery studio, a candle shop and a wine glass seller each need a different build. So we size every box to the product, not to a stock shelf.
If mugs are your only line, our mug shipping boxes for ceramics may suit you better.
What makes a mailer safe for breakable goods?
No single item on that list does the job alone. Most breakage comes from thin board, loose fit and too little padding together.
We do not publish drop or load ratings. Instead we build each box around the sizes and weight you give us, so details help.
- Sturdier board, such as C flute, or BC double wall for heavy pieces
- A snug inside size, so the product cannot gain speed in a drop
- Cushioning room on every side of the item
- Printed marks that tell handlers what is inside
- A taped front edge, so the lid stays shut if the box falls
Which board suits glass and pottery?
Board is the biggest choice you will make. Thicker flutes hold more air, and that air absorbs a knock before it reaches the item. Our guide to single wall and double wall compared covers the trade-offs.
Heavier board makes a heavier package, which can raise your shipping costs. A fitted insert inside B flute can protect as well as loose goods in double wall.
| Board | Thickness | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| B flute single wall | About 1/8 in (3 mm) | Single glasses, jar candles, small pottery |
| C flute single wall | About 5/32 in (4 mm) | Bowls, vases and wrapped bottles |
| BC double wall | About 1/4 in (7 mm) | Dinnerware sets and large ceramics |
| E flute single wall | About 1/16 in (1.5 mm) | Light items held firmly in an insert |
What gap belongs between my item and the box wall?
Leave enough for your cushioning and nothing extra. Wrap the item first, measure it wrapped, and give us those numbers as the inside size.
If you plan to use an insert, measure the bare product instead. We cut the insert to the product and size the box around the insert.
Handles and spouts count. A pitcher should be measured across the handle, not just the body. Our guide on measuring a box the right way walks through it.
Send your weight too. It helps us decide between single and double wall.
Should I use wrap, paper fill or an insert?
Each method has a place. Wrap is quick and flexible, which suits mixed orders. Loose fill stops movement but takes care to pack evenly.
Inserts lock one product shape in place, so they suit repeat items like a candle jar or a set of four glasses. Packing is faster and the unboxing looks tidy.
Many Etsy and Shopify sellers combine methods: an insert for the main piece, then a sheet of paper on top. Some add crinkle paper shred for gift boxes around the edges.
Should the box say fragile on the outside?
Yes, it helps. Printed marks remind handlers to go gently and tell your customer to open the box with care. One word on two sides is often enough.
We print plain, one color, two color or full color CMYK, inside and outside. A single color looks clean on kraft. Inside, a short note on unwrapping glass is a nice touch.
You can place your logo and marks on the Design Your Box page. Finishes include matte or gloss lamination, spot UV, foil stamping and embossing, though most fragile jobs stay uncoated or matte.
How do I pack a fragile mailer step by step?
If you hear a rattle, open it and add more fill. A noise in your packing area usually means a broken item on arrival.
- Wrap each piece on its own, with extra layers on rims, handles and spouts.
- Lay paper or an insert across the base of the box.
- Set the heaviest piece in the center of the base.
- Fill every gap at the sides and top so nothing can shift.
- Close the lid, tape the front edge and give the box a gentle shake.
Why do fragile shipments break in transit?
Every one of these is avoidable with the right size and a few extra minutes at the packing table.
- E flute used for a heavy glass piece with no insert
- A gap at the top, which lets the item lift and drop
- Two glass pieces packed touching each other
- A handle or spout pressed against the box wall
- No tape, so one knock pops the lid open
When is a box inside a box worth the effort?
It pays off for very delicate or high-value pieces. Pack the wrapped item in a small inner box, then place that in a larger mailer with fill all around. Two walls and a cushion then sit between the item and any knock.
It costs more time and board, so most sellers save it for their most fragile lines, like thin glass or large one-off ceramics. We can make inner and outer boxes on one order so they fit each other. Our corrugated inserts for fragile products can hold the inner box steady too.
For everyday mugs and jar candles, one well-fitted mailer with good wrap is usually plenty.
Who orders fragile item mailers?
Most buyers are makers and small online shops. Potters, glass artists, candle makers and home decor sellers ship breakable goods every week.
Gift brands sending glasses for weddings or birthdays use them as well, and so do subscription boxes that include a ceramic piece. If your item is taller than it is wide, ask about a tuck top build, since it handles height more easily.
How do I order fragile item mailers?

Fragile Item Mailers: questions
12 answersWhich board is best for wine glasses?
C flute at about 5/32 in (4 mm) with dividers works well for most glasses. Stemware sets or heavy crystal may call for BC double wall.
Can you print FRAGILE on the box?
Yes. We can print wording, arrows or icons in one color or full color on any panel, inside or outside.
Do I still need wrap or paper fill?
Usually, unless the box has a fitted insert. The box is the outer shell, and wrap or an insert stops the item moving.
How snug should the fit be?
Snug around the wrapped item. If it shifts when you shake the closed box gently, add fill or reduce the inside size.
Can you make an insert for my glasses?
Yes. Corrugated or paperboard inserts can be cut to hold each glass apart, and they are quoted with the box.
Do you give drop test or load ratings?
No. We specify each box from your product sizes, weight and packing method, then advise on the board.
Is double wall always the safer choice?
Not always. It adds weight and bulk. For light items, a fitted single wall box with good wrap can be enough.
Are these suitable for jar candles?
Yes, they are a common use. B flute with an insert or wrap around the jar works well for most sizes.
Should I tape the box shut?
Yes. One strip along the front edge keeps the lid closed if the box is dropped or bumped.
Can I check my FRAGILE marks and logo placement before the mailers are printed?
Yes. Every fragile mailer order gets a free design proof showing where your marks and logo sit, and nothing is printed until you approve it.
What if my fragile mailers arrive with a printing error?
Report any misprints, damage or defects within 10 days with photos. We will reprint the mailers or refund you.
How are fragile item mailers shipped to me?
They ship tracked and arrive in 2 to 3 business days. Shipping is free to any US address.
