What are art print shipping boxes?
These are corrugated boxes cut to the size of a print, canvas or frame. The inside dimensions include room for whatever padding you add.
Shape follows the work. Unframed prints go in a shallow box. Glazed frames and canvases need more depth, so the frame never touches the walls.
If your art ships alongside other goods, compare it with our general shipping boxes for mixed orders.
Who needs boxes made for artwork?
Anyone selling pieces that cannot take a bend or a crushed corner. Buyers pay for art that matches the listing photo, and the box is the first thing they touch.
A gallery usually wants plain, sturdy boxes it can reuse for returns. An Etsy or Shopify artist often wants a branded box that feels like part of the piece. Small studios can also browse our packaging options for small businesses.
- Illustrators and painters selling originals
- Print studios running limited editions
- Photographers shipping mounted prints
- Frame shops sending finished work home
- Galleries and art fair exhibitors
- Poster sellers who offer framed options
Should I ship a print flat or rolled?
Ship flat when the work is mounted, framed or printed on heavy stock. Roll only posters and light, unmounted paper.
Many sellers use both methods. Open editions go out in kraft paper tubes for rolled posters, while originals travel flat.
A flat box also holds a backing board, a certificate and a thank-you note in neat layers.
What size box suits a framed print?
Measure the frame, not the picture. An 11 × 14 in print can sit in a frame closer to 13 × 16 in once the molding is counted. Our guide on how to measure a box covers the basics.
Then build up the inside size layer by layer. These steps give a sound starting point.
- Measure the outer length and width of the frame or mat.
- Measure the depth, including any hanging hardware.
- Add the thickness of a corner guard on every side.
- Add about 1/4 in per side for bubble wrap or foam.
- Check that the closed flaps will not press on the glass.
- Send the finished inside size and your quantity with your quote request.
Which board protects artwork best?
Stiffness matters for flat prints. Cushion matters for glass. Pick the board that covers the weak point of the piece.
Flute heights are explained in our corrugated board flute guide. The table shows where we usually start.
| Artwork | Suggested board | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Mounted print up to 11 × 14 in | B flute, about 1/8 in | Stiff enough to resist bending |
| Stretched canvas | C flute, about 5/32 in | Extra cushion over the painted face |
| Glazed frame up to 20 × 26 in | BC double wall, about 1/4 in | Thick walls absorb knocks near glass |
| Thin print on a backing board | E flute, about 1/16 in | Slim and light for small flat orders |
| Several small framed pieces | BC double wall, about 1/4 in | Holds its shape when packed full |
How do I protect the corners of a frame?
Corners take the hardest hits. Fit a guard on each one before the frame goes in, so no corner touches the box. You can add edge protectors sized for frames to the same order.
Cover the glass with a cross of low-tack tape or a sheet of card. If the glass cracks, the shards stay put and will not scratch the print.
Then wrap the frame and fill any gaps. A frame that can slide even a little is the one that arrives with a split corner.
How do I ship an unframed original?
Sandwich the work between two stiff boards cut slightly larger than the paper. Tape the boards to each other at the edges, never to the art.
Lay glassine or acid-free tissue over the surface first. Pastel, charcoal and soft pencil all smudge without it. You can order matching cardboard sheets for backing boards with your boxes.
The sandwich then goes into a shallow box with a snug fit. A box only about 1/4 in larger than the boards stops the bundle from sliding.
Can the box carry my studio branding?
Yes. Print plain, one color, two color or full color CMYK, outside and inside. A patterned inner panel makes opening the box feel like part of the artwork.
Handling icons are worth adding. Fragile, keep dry and this way up marks help carriers treat the box with care. Try placements in Design Your Box before you order.
- Uncoated kraft for a plain studio look
- Matte lamination over full color artwork
- Gloss lamination for rich, saturated color
- Foil stamping on a signature or logo
- Embossing or spot UV on a small studio mark
What packing mistakes ruin artwork?
Most damage we hear about traces back to a few small habits. Check your packing table against this list. Heavy glazed pieces often suit double wall boxes for heavy frames.
Also watch for damp. Wrapping a print in plastic while the studio is humid traps moisture, and the paper can ripple before the box is opened.
- Measuring the picture instead of the frame
- Leaving glass bare inside the box
- Skipping guards on framed pieces
- Rolling work that is already mounted
- Using thin board for a big glazed frame
Can you make boxes for several print sizes?
Yes. Most print shops sell three or four standard sizes, so one matching box per size keeps packing fast and packages snug. Less filler also means less to buy.
We can carry the same artwork across every size so the range looks like a set. Each size gets its own proof, so you can check the design on smaller panels. For very shallow sizes, see flat cardboard boxes for thin items.

Art Print Shipping Boxes: questions
12 answersWhat size box fits an 11 × 14 in frame?
Measure the outside of the frame first, then add room for guards and wrap. A box near 15 × 12 × 2.5 in inside often works.
Do framed pieces need double wall board?
For glazed frames above about 16 × 20 in, BC double wall is the safer pick. Smaller mounted prints usually travel well in B flute.
Can I ship a stretched canvas in these boxes?
Yes. Allow for the canvas depth plus a cover over the painted face. C flute or double wall board works well.
Can you print fragile icons on the box?
Yes. Fragile, keep dry and this way up icons can go on any panel, outside or inside.
Can the inside of the box carry a pattern?
Yes. Inside print is available in full color, so a pattern or short note can greet the buyer on opening.
Should I roll my prints or ship them flat?
Mounted and framed work should always go flat. Light unmounted posters can be rolled in a tube.
Do you supply corner protectors?
Yes. Edge and corner protectors can be quoted with your boxes. Tell us their thickness so the box allows for them.
Can I order boxes for different frame sizes?
Yes. Many studios order one box per frame size, and each size gets its own proof.
Can my signature be foil stamped on the box?
Yes. Foil stamping looks sharp on a signature or small studio logo.
