What are regular slotted containers?

A regular slotted container, or RSC, is a one-piece corrugated carton with four flaps on top and four on the bottom. Every flap is the same depth, so the two outer flaps meet at the center when folded. You close it with packing tape.

What is a regular slotted container?

A regular slotted container is the standard shipping carton. It is made from one sheet of corrugated board that is slotted, creased and joined with glue at a single corner.

The four top flaps and four bottom flaps are all the same depth. The two outer flaps are each half the box width, so their edges touch in the middle when folded down.

Nearly every warehouse stocks some version of it. It anchors our corrugated and shipping box range.

Why do so many shippers choose an RSC?

One flat sheet and a few cuts is all the style needs. That keeps board use low and the price per box down.

Packing is simple too. Fold the bottom, tape it, load the goods, then tape the top. Nothing needs tucking or locking.

  • Efficient use of board for the space you get
  • Fast to pack at a busy table
  • Stacks square on a pallet or shelf
  • Four flat side panels for print
  • Available in single wall or double wall

Who uses regular slotted containers?

Fulfillment centers use them for picking and outbound cases. Food makers and craft breweries pack cases of jars and bottles for distributors.

Etsy and Shopify sellers reach for them when an order is heavy, such as candles, books or cookware. Smaller orders may suit box styles built for online orders better.

Offices, schools and movers like them for files, supplies and household moves. A few set sizes keep a storage room organized.

Seasonal staff learn the fold in minutes. That helps in the busy weeks before Thanksgiving gifting.

What size regular slotted container do I need?

Begin with the inside space. Set your product, or a full packed case, on a table and measure the length, width and height in inches.

Then add room for wrapping. Loose items cushioned with paper need more space than a single snug, boxed product.

Our guide to measuring a box shows exactly where to place the tape.

  1. Measure the product or packed case at its widest points.
  2. Add 1/4 to 1 in per side for wrapping, based on how fragile it is.
  3. Send us the inside length, width and height.
  4. Mention the rough weight so we can suggest a board.

Which board works best for an RSC?

Single wall C flute (about 5/32 in, 4 mm) is the usual pick. It cushions well and handles typical packages and cases.

Choose BC double wall (about 1/4 in, 7 mm) for heavy contents, tall stacks or rough handling. E flute (about 1/16 in, 1.5 mm) suits small cartons that need tight folds, and B flute (about 1/8 in, 3 mm) sits in between.

You can compare every grade in our flute guide for corrugated board.

Can I print on a regular slotted container?

Yes. Many buyers keep the carton plain kraft and add one color for a logo and handling marks. Others print full color CMYK on all four panels, inside and outside.

A white liner gives brighter color than kraft. Matte or gloss lamination, spot UV, foil stamping and embossing are available when a carton needs to look sharp.

How should I tape and pack an RSC?

Fold the short flaps in first, then the long ones. Run tape down the center seam and a few inches onto each end panel.

On heavy cartons, add tape across each end seam. This keeps the flaps flat and the corners from splitting.

Fill any gap at the top before closing. An empty space lets the lid sag when another box sits above it.

Keep soft goods slightly below the flap line so a box cutter does not nick them. Bottles and jars stay apart with corrugated dividers that fit inside.

What mistakes happen when ordering RSCs?

The most common one is measuring the outside of an old carton and sending that as the inside size. The new box then runs oversize on every side.

Another is choosing thin board for a large carton. Wide panels flex more, so bigger sizes often call for double wall even with light contents.

A third is picking an RSC when the product needs a lid that opens often. Tell us how the box will be used and we will say so. For typical dimensions, see standard cardboard box sizes.

When is another slotted style a better fit?

The RSC is a sound default, but it is not the only option. A half slotted container has flaps on the bottom only, so a separate lid can sit on top.

A full overlap container has outer flaps that cover the full width. That adds strength at the top and base.

Not sure which to pick? Describe the contents and how the box gets handled. We will suggest a style.

How do I order regular slotted containers?

Pricing starts from $0.30 a box. The exact figure comes in your quote by email within one business day. Minimums are low and quoted per job.

Once you approve the free proof, your cartons are made in 4 to 6 business days. Free tracked shipping to any US address follows and takes 2 to 3 business days.

If your load is heavy, read about double wall boxes for heavy loads before you choose.

  1. Send the quantity, the inside size and the weight you expect the box to hold.
  2. Choose kraft or white, plain or printed.
  3. Review your emailed quote and free design proof.
  4. Approve the proof and we start production.
  5. Report misprints, damage or defects within 10 days with photos for a reprint or refund.

Regular Slotted Containers: questions

12 answers
What does RSC mean?

RSC means regular slotted container. It is the standard four-flap corrugated carton used for shipping and storage.

Do the flaps on an RSC overlap?

No. The two outer flaps meet in the center without overlapping. For flaps that cover the full width, ask about a full overlap container.

Are RSCs shipped assembled?

They ship flat. The manufacturer's joint on one corner is already glued, so the box opens up ready to tape.

Can I order white RSC boxes?

Yes. We make them with a white outer liner or brown kraft. White gives full color artwork a brighter base.

How thick is the board?

C flute single wall is about 5/32 in (4 mm). BC double wall is about 1/4 in (7 mm) for heavier loads.

Can you print all four sides?

Yes. Every side panel can carry artwork, and the flaps can be printed as well if your design calls for it.

Can I add dividers inside an RSC?

Yes. Corrugated dividers can be made to fit, which keeps bottles, jars and fragile items from touching.

How do I measure for an RSC?

Measure your goods, add room for wrapping, and send the inside length, width and height in inches. We handle the rest.

Are RSCs a good choice for moving?

Yes. Plain double wall RSCs stack well, take tape firmly and hold up through loading and unloading.

How fast will my RSC order arrive?

Once the proof is approved, your cartons take 4 to 6 business days to make. Tracked shipping then takes 2 to 3 business days.

How much do regular slotted containers cost?

Pricing starts from $0.30 a box. Your emailed quote gives the exact figure for your size, board and print.

What if my cartons arrive damaged or misprinted?

Email photos within 10 days. We will reprint the order or refund it.
