Quick answer

What are full overlap containers?

A full overlap container, or FOL, is a slotted corrugated carton with extra deep outer flaps. The flaps are as deep as the box is wide, so they cover the top and bottom completely. Think of it as a tougher version of the standard slotted box.

Key facts

  • Outer flaps overlap fully
  • Two board layers top and bottom
  • Suits long, narrow goods
  • Hand holes on request
  • From $0.30 a box

What is a full overlap container?

A full overlap container starts as a flat slotted corrugated sheet. You fold it into a four-flap carton, but the top and bottom close in a different way from a standard box.

The two long outer flaps do not stop at the center. They reach all the way across and cover the shorter inner flaps.

The result is a full second layer of board on both ends. This style is known as FEFCO 0203, and you can browse related styles in our corrugated and shipping box range.

Why pick full overlap flaps over a standard carton?

Extra board helps where cartons take the worst abuse. Stacked loads press on the top. Dropped items and sharp corners hit the bottom.

The wider overlap also gives tape more surface to grip. The seal stays shut when heavy contents shift or push upward.

  • Two layers of board across the top and bottom
  • A stronger seal for dense contents
  • Better protection from punctures above
  • A usable closure on long, slim boxes
  • A flat top that carries stacked cartons evenly

Who buys full overlap containers?

Hardware wholesalers, auto parts sellers and tile suppliers order them often. So do restaurants moving canned goods or glassware, and offices boxing up files for storage.

Etsy and Shopify sellers use them for pottery, stone pieces and cast iron. Long goods such as curtain rods and rolled fabric suit the style, because standard flaps on a slim box barely meet.

Warehouses like the flat, double layer top. The next carton sits level on it, so stacks stay straight. If you ship single orders to customers, our ecommerce shipping boxes may also fit.

Measuring for your full overlap box

Give us the inside length, width and height your goods need. We work out the flap depth from the width, so you do not have to calculate it.

The outside height grows a little, since two board layers sit on each end. Your inside height stays as ordered. For a step-by-step guide, read how to measure a box.

  1. Measure the item or the packed bundle at its widest points.
  2. Add room for wrapping, padding or edge protection.
  3. Note how heavy the filled box will be.
  4. Send the inside size and the weight with your quote request.

Single wall or double wall for a full overlap container?

Most FOL orders carry weight, so BC flute double wall at about 1/4 in (7 mm) is the usual pick. The thick side walls resist crushing while the overlap guards the ends.

Lighter long goods can go in C flute single wall at about 5/32 in (4 mm). Slim items like trim rarely need more.

Not sure which to choose? Tell us your heaviest item and how high you stack. You can also compare double wall boxes for heavy loads.

Can I print on full overlap containers?

Yes. Warehouse teams often print size codes, handling arrows and a logo, so cartons are quick to find and sort.

Print runs plain, one color, two color or full color CMYK, inside and outside, on kraft or white board. The wide top flap is the best spot for a logo because it is the first face people see.

For extra polish, choose embossing, foil stamping, spot UV, or a matte or gloss laminate. Place your artwork in Design Your Box. We send a free design proof before anything is printed, and our designers help with layout at no charge.

Packing and sealing an FOL box

Fold the short inner flaps in first. Then close the two long flaps over them. Run tape along the exposed edge and carry it down each side panel.

For dense goods, add a strip across each end as well. Fill the box so contents sit snug under the flaps, because the double layer works best with support beneath it.

Wrap anything with sharp corners, or add a corrugated pad so it cannot punch through a side wall.

Mark the contents and weight on one end panel. Whoever lifts the box then knows what to expect.

How is an FOL different from a regular slotted container?

Only the flap depth changes. On a regular box the long flaps are half the width and meet in the middle. On an FOL they are the full width and overlap.

That single change makes the ends much tougher. If your cartons travel heavy or sit under a stack, the overlap is often worth it. Our regular slotted containers are the lighter alternative.

Both fold from flat the same way, so your packers learn nothing new when you switch.

Common mistakes when ordering full overlap containers

Do not choose an FOL for light, soft goods. The extra board adds cost without much benefit, and a standard box does the same job.

Watch very wide sizes. The flaps match the width, so a wide FOL uses a lot of board. For wide, shallow goods, a different style may fit better.

Also check the closed outside size against your shelving and carrier size limits. The added layers can matter. Our guide to the cheapest way to ship boxes covers those limits.

Full Overlap Containers: questions

12 answers
What does full overlap mean on a shipping box?

The two long outer flaps are as deep as the box is wide. Once closed, they cover the entire top and bottom.

Is a full overlap container the same as FEFCO 0203?

Yes. FEFCO 0203 is the style code for the full overlap slotted container.

Is an FOL stronger than a regular slotted container?

The top and bottom are stronger because they carry two layers of board. The side walls match a regular box made from the same board.

Which board should I choose for heavy goods?

BC flute double wall, about 1/4 in (7 mm), is the usual choice. Lighter long items can use C flute single wall.

Do full overlap containers work for long, narrow items?

Yes. On a slim box, standard flaps barely meet. Full overlap flaps give you a solid end to tape.

Can you add hand holes?

Yes. We can die-cut hand holes in the end panels so the box is easier to carry.

Can I print size codes and handling arrows?

Yes. Many buyers print dimensions, arrows and a logo so stock is easy to identify on a shelf.

Why does an FOL cost a bit more than a regular box?

The outer flaps are twice as deep, so each box uses more board. The difference depends on your size and board.

How do I seal a full overlap box?

Tape along the top flap edge and down both sides. Add a strip across each end for dense contents.

How much do full overlap containers cost?

Pricing starts from $0.30 a box. The exact figure for your size, board and print arrives in your emailed quote.

How long does a full overlap container order take to arrive?

After you approve the proof, your FOL boxes are produced in 4 to 6 business days. Free tracked shipping then arrives in 2 to 3 business days.

What if my full overlap containers arrive damaged or misprinted?

Email us photos of the FOL boxes within 10 days. We will reprint the order or refund you.
