What are cardboard boxes with lids?
A lidded box has a base and a separate top that lifts off. You can open it, shut it and open it again with no tape and no tearing.
Some versions are one piece instead, with the lid hinged along the back edge. Either way, we make the box to the inside length, width and height you give us.
Which lid style fits my product?
The lid changes how the box feels, how much board it uses and how it handles travel. These are the three common choices. For a one-piece top, look at our hinged lid boxes for retail.
| Lid style | How it works | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Shallow lift-off lid | Top covers about 1 in of the base | Shoe boxes, paper goods, shelf storage |
| Full depth lid | Top slides down to the base bottom | Gifts and items that need extra side strength |
| Hinged lid | Top folds back along one long edge | Mailer-style orders and repeat openings |
Who buys cardboard boxes with lids?
Anyone whose product gets opened, used and put away again. Etsy sellers pack candles, prints and handmade soap in them. Subscription brands like a top that lifts off cleanly for the unboxing photo.
Wedding planners use them for favors and invitations. Many boxes for small business owners start with a simple lidded style like this one.
- Shoe and apparel shops
- Etsy and Shopify sellers
- Subscription and gift brands
- Photographers and print studios
- Offices, schools and home organizers
How do I size the base and the lid?
Send us the inside size of the base. We cut the lid a touch larger so it slides on without a fight.
A lid that is too snug crushes the corners. A loose one slips off the second someone picks the box up. Our how to measure a box guide explains inside versus outside sizes.
- Measure your item or stack at its widest points.
- Add a little space for tissue or wrapping.
- Pick a shallow or full depth lid.
- Choose a thumb notch on one long side, on both, or on neither.
- Send the base inside size in inches. We work out the lid from it.
Which board works best for a lidded box?
Kraft or white paperboard gives crisp edges and a smooth surface for print. It suits cards, scarves, candles and other light goods.
For shoes and heavier contents, E flute (about 1/16 in, 1.5 mm) adds stiffness without much bulk. B flute (about 1/8 in, 3 mm) is firmer, and C flute (about 5/32 in, 4 mm) is a little thicker still.
If the box ships bare, double wall BC flute (about 1/4 in, 7 mm) is the sturdiest option. Our corrugated board flute guide compares them side by side.
How can I print and finish the lid?
Most of the branding belongs on the lid, since it is the first thing a customer sees. A one color logo on kraft looks clean and costs less than full coverage. CMYK suits photos and patterns.
You can also print the inside of the base and the underside of the lid. See how designs come together on our custom printed boxes page.
- A foil stamped lid that looks ready to give as a gift
- Embossed logo on plain kraft for a quiet, tactile mark
- Print on the base sides to make stacked boxes easy to identify
- A short message under the lid for the opening moment
Can I ship a lidded box?
A lift-off lid is not a sealed closure. If the box travels on its own, hold the top down with a strip of paper tape or a sticker at each end. Otherwise it can shift and let the contents slide out.
For fragile goods, place the lidded box inside a plain outer carton so the printed lid stays clean. Our mailer boxes with hinged tops close fully when an order has to travel.
Are lidded boxes good for storage?
Yes. A lid keeps out dust and light, and it can come off and go back on many times. Photos, letters, craft kits and spare cables all store well in them.
Pick a few sizes that share the same footprint. Lids of equal size stack neatly, even if the bases differ in height. A label on the short end lets you find a box without lifting the ones above.
Keep boxes somewhere dry, away from heaters and damp walls. Dry board holds its shape, and the lid keeps its easy fit. See also our cardboard storage boxes for offices.
What mistakes should I avoid with lid boxes?
The most common one is asking for a tight lid. It looks fine in a photo but frustrates customers and splits corners. A lid that glides on is the better choice.
A second mistake is leaving off the thumb notch when the lid is full depth. Trapped air can make the top hard to lift. Last, check that your artwork reads the right way once the lid sits on the base. The proof shows this.
If items rattle, add corrugated inserts to hold items in place.

Cardboard Boxes with Lids: questions
12 answersHow does a shallow lid differ from a full depth one?
A shallow lid covers only the upper part of the base. A full depth lid reaches the bottom and gives double side walls all around.
Can I choose a hinged lid instead of a separate one?
Yes. A hinged lid stays attached along one edge and folds closed. It suits boxes that need to travel to customers.
Will the lid stay on during shipping?
A lift-off lid can move in transit. Hold it with tape strips or stickers, or place the box inside an outer carton.
What is the cut-out on the edge of the base?
That is a thumb notch. It is a half-round cut that makes the lid easy to lift, and we can add it to one or both long sides.
Can I print only the lid?
Yes. Many buyers print the lid and leave the base plain kraft. It saves money and puts your artwork where people look.
Do these work as shoe boxes?
Yes. A shallow lid box in E flute or paperboard is the classic shoe box. We make it to the size of your footwear.
Can customers reuse the boxes?
Yes. Because they open without tape, they hold up to repeated use. Many customers keep them for storage.
Do the bases and lids come assembled?
No. Both arrive flat in separate bundles. Locking corners let each part fold into a tray.
Can I add an insert inside the base?
Yes. A card tray or divider can keep items from sliding around. Tell us what the insert needs to hold.
How much do boxes with lids cost?
They start from $0.30 a box. Size, board, print and finish set the final figure, which is sent in your emailed quote.
How many days until my lidded boxes are made and delivered?
Making the base and lid sets takes 4–6 business days, counted from the day you approve the proof. Free tracked shipping then adds 2–3 business days.
Which board should I pick for heavier contents?
Choose B flute, C flute or double wall BC flute. Save paperboard for lighter items such as cards and stationery.
