What is a self seal mailer box?

It is a corrugated mailer that folds up from one flat blank. A strip of adhesive sits on the lid flap, covered by a thin paper liner.

The shape is close to a standard custom mailer box with a tuck lid. Only the closure changes. The glue replaces the friction tuck and the strip of packing tape.

Who uses self seal mailers?

Mostly sellers who pack the same order again and again. A few seconds saved per box adds up over a long shift.

  • Etsy and Shopify sellers shipping from a spare room or garage
  • Subscription brands that send one box size to every member
  • Apparel shops packing folded shirts and leggings
  • Skincare and candle brands that want a clean lid with no tape across the print
  • Small fulfillment teams pushing out a few hundred orders a day

How do you close a self seal mailer?

The glue sits on the inside of the front flap. Once the liner is gone, it bonds to the box wall as you press the lid down.

Here is the routine most packers settle into.

  • Keep flat blanks within arm's reach of the bench
  • Fold a stack of bases first, then fill and close them in a row
  • Drop used liners in a bin, since they get slick on a hard floor
  • Place the shipping label on the lid, clear of the tear strip
  1. Fold the base and side walls up until the box stands square.
  2. Set the product inside, with paper fill if needed.
  3. Peel the liner off the strip in one steady pull.
  4. Fold the lid over and tuck the front flap in.
  5. Press along the whole glued edge for a few seconds.

Do I need a tear strip?

A tear strip is a perforated pull tab in the front panel. Your customer tugs it and the lid opens without scissors.

Because the seal is strong, people tend to hack at the box with a knife when there is no tab. That can scratch the product. If you want buyers to return items, ask about a second strip on the same box. We will check whether your flap depth allows it.

Should I choose a self seal lid or a plain tuck lid?

A plain tuck lid holds by friction. It works for gifts you hand over in person, but in a shipping bag or truck it often needs tape to stay shut.

The adhesive lid skips that step and keeps your artwork clean. It adds a little cost per box because the glue is applied at the factory. If you pack only a handful of orders a week, tape may do the job. At higher volume, the time saved usually wins.

Some brands order both. Plain tuck boxes go to local pickups, and self seal boxes go to everything shipped by mail.

What size self seal mailer should I order?

Measure the product, then add a little room for fill or a card insert. We build the box to the inside length, width and height you give us, in inches or millimeters.

Keep the depth snug. A big gap above the product lets it slide around, and a glued lid cannot pull things tight the way a taped seam can. This guide to measuring a box from the inside shows the steps.

Is a glued lid strong enough for shipping?

For the goods these boxes normally hold, yes. The strip bonds along the full front flap, so a corner cannot lift the way a loose tuck can.

Fit matters just as much. A product that fills the box keeps pressure off the lid. For heavier items, choose B flute and add paper fill. Wrap anything breakable on its own first.

Very dense orders belong in a taped shipping carton instead.

Which board works best for self seal mailers?

Most are single wall corrugated. The flute you pick sets the thickness and the feel in the hand.

BoardThicknessGood for
E flute single wallAbout 1/16 in (1.5 mm)Apparel, cosmetics, light retail goods
B flute single wallAbout 1/8 in (3 mm)Heavier orders, wrapped glass jars
White E fluteAbout 1/16 in (1.5 mm)Bright full color print on the outside
Kraft E fluteAbout 1/16 in (1.5 mm)A natural brown look with one color print

Can I print inside and outside the box?

Yes. We print plain, one color, two color or full color CMYK, outside, inside or both. A thank-you note under the lid is a favorite, because it is the first thing a customer sees.

Finishes include uncoated kraft, matte or gloss lamination, spot UV, foil stamping and embossing. Keep art clear of the glue strip and tear line. You can place your logo in Design Your Box before uploading files.

What mistakes should I avoid?

Most trouble comes from sizing and storage, not from the adhesive.

  • Ordering a box too deep, so the product rattles
  • Storing blanks in a hot garage or damp basement
  • Putting a QR code or barcode across the tear line
  • Overstuffing so the lid bows and only the ends stick
  • Touching the exposed glue with dusty hands

Self Seal Mailer Boxes: questions

12 answers
Do self seal mailers need tape?

No. The adhesive strip holds the lid shut by itself. Some brands add branded tape for looks, but the box does not need it.

How long does the adhesive last in storage?

Kept flat, dry and at room temperature, the strip stays usable for a good while. Heat and humidity weaken it, so avoid hot garages and damp storerooms.

Can customers reseal the box for a return?

Only with a second glue strip. Mention it when you request your quote, and we will check that your size and flap depth allow two strips.

Is the tear strip standard?

It is an option you pick on the quote. We suggest it with a glued lid, since it gives the customer a clean way in.

Is the underside of the lid printable?

Yes. The inside of the lid can carry one color or full color print. It is the usual spot for a thank-you message or care tips.

Which board should I pick?

E flute single wall suits most apparel and beauty orders. B flute adds thickness for heavier goods or products that need extra cushioning.

Will the glue stick on a laminated box?

We plan where lamination goes so the strip still bonds to the wall. The design proof shows this before anything is printed.

In what condition do self seal mailers ship?

They ship flat, with the strip fixed in place under its liner. Free tracked shipping takes 2 to 3 business days after production ends.

What inside sizes work for a self seal mailer?

Any inside length, width and height your product needs, given in inches or millimeters. The table on this page lists common starting points for these mailers, not stock sizes.

Will the proof show where the glue strip and tear line sit?

Yes. Every order gets a free design proof that marks your artwork, the glue strip and the tear line before we print.

What if some boxes arrive damaged?

Send photos within 10 days if any boxes are misprinted, damaged or defective. We will reprint them or refund you.

How much do these mailers cost?

Pricing starts from $0.30 a box. The exact figure depends on size, board and print, and we send it by email within one business day.
