Quick answer

What are side loading mailers?

A side loading mailer is a slim corrugated box with its opening on a short end. You slide the item in, fold the end flaps and tuck the closure. It works best for stiff, flat products that would shift around in a deeper box.

Key facts

What are side loading mailers?

They are flat-packed corrugated boxes that fold around your product and close at a short end. The opening sits on the side, not on top.

You get a solid top panel with no lid seam. That panel is easy to label or print.

If your goods are mostly paper, compare them with our slim mailers for paperwork and brochures. A side loader is usually a bit sturdier.

Why load from the side instead of the top?

Flat goods are hard to lower into a top-opening box. Edges catch on the walls, and the lid ends up sitting loose.

A side loader lets the product glide along the base. The walls hug it once the flaps are folded. Many packers like that the box stays flat on the table the whole time.

The build also uses less board. There is no deep lid and no extra wall, so the box stays slim and light.

What can I ship in a side loading mailer?

Look for items that are flat, stiff and even in thickness. Soft or bulky goods usually pack better in a top-opening box.

Not sure about yours? Send a photo and the measurements.

  • Hardcover and paperback books
  • Art prints backed with stiff card
  • Wall calendars and planners
  • Small frames and canvas panels
  • Contracts, reports and certificates
  • Vinyl records and slim game cases

How do I work out the right inside size?

Measure the length, width and thickness of the item. Add about 1/8 in to the length and width so it slides in without a fight. Add a little height if you wrap the product first.

Height is the number that matters most. Extra room lets the product rattle, and too little makes loading slow. Our guide on measuring the inside of a box shows the method step by step.

If you sell one book and also sets of two, tell us both thicknesses. Two heights often cost less than filling a tall box with paper.

Which board should I choose?

Most side loaders are single wall corrugated in kraft or white. Pick by the weight of the product and how hard its corners are.

E flute is enough for most prints, paperwork and a single light book. Move up to B flute for frames or a stack of titles. Our flute guide for corrugated board explains the differences.

BoardThicknessSuits
E flute, whiteAbout 1/16 in (1.5 mm)Prints, documents, light books
E flute, kraftAbout 1/16 in (1.5 mm)Notebooks and calendars with a natural look
B flute, white or kraftAbout 1/8 in (3 mm)Hardcovers, frames, book stacks
BC double wallAbout 1/4 in (7 mm)Heavy framed work, large bundles

How do you fold and close a side loader?

After a dozen boxes the routine feels automatic. Keep a bundle of flats within reach of your packing bench.

  1. Place the flat blank on the table with the print side down.
  2. Bend the base edges upward, then lock the closed end.
  3. Slide your product in through the open end.
  4. Fold the side flaps inward, then press the tuck flap home.
  5. Seal the end with one strip of packing tape.

Can side loading mailers be printed?

Yes. The wide top panel suits a logo, a pattern or a short message. We print plain, one color, two color or full color CMYK, outside and inside.

White board gives clean, bright color. Kraft has a warmer look and works well with black or white ink. Matte or gloss lamination, spot UV, foil and embossing are available too.

Many shops keep these boxes plain or one color, since they are mainly for shipping. Place your artwork in Design Your Box, and our designers will help with layout. You see a free proof before anything is printed.

How should I pack books and prints inside?

For heavy hardcovers, add edge protectors for box corners so knocks never reach the board.

  • Slide prints into a card backer or clear sleeve first
  • Wrap hardcover corners or add corner guards
  • Lay a clean sheet of paper over the face of a print
  • Put the shipping label on the solid top panel
  • Mark the title on the end panel if boxes wait on a shelf

Is a side loader safer than a padded mailer?

A padded mailer is light and cheap, but it bends. A print, a certificate or a hardcover can crease inside one.

A side loading box gives you a rigid shell on every side. Corrugated board resists bending far better than paper padding. The closed ends also guard the corners.

If you also sell soft goods like scarves, a padded paper mailer for soft items is a fair match. Use the side loader for anything stiff.

What mistakes should I avoid?

The biggest one is ordering a box that is too tall. The design works because it grips the product, and spare height undoes that.

Another is skipping tape. The tuck flap holds on a desk, but a bumpy trip can work it loose. Also keep the label off the opening, or your customer must cut through it.

Check your proof as well. No text or logo should cross the tuck fold, where it would split or hide.

How do I order side loading mailers?

Pricing starts from $0.30 a box. The exact figure depends on size, board and print, and we send it in your emailed quote within one business day.

Send your item sizes through our quote request for custom mailers, or write to info@ordercardboardboxes.com. After you approve the proof, production takes 4–6 business days. Free tracked shipping to any US address takes 2–3 business days.

Side Loading Mailers: questions

12 answers
What does side loading mean?

The box opens at one short end, not the top. Your item slides along the base, and the end flaps fold shut behind it.

Are side loading mailers good for books?

Yes. The slim shape holds a book snug, so the corners do not bang around during transit.

Do I need tape on a side loader?

The tuck flap keeps the end closed, but one strip of tape across it adds security for shipping.

Can I ship a large art print in one?

Yes, if the print is flat and backed with stiff card. We make the box to your print size plus a small allowance.

Which board suits framed pieces?

B flute at about 1/8 in works for most small frames. Larger or heavier frames do better in BC double wall at about 1/4 in.

Do the mailers arrive assembled?

No. They arrive flat in bundles and fold around the product by hand, with no glue needed.

Can I print inside a side loading mailer?

Yes, inside print is available for these mailers. Many sellers print only the top panel and leave the inside plain.

How slim can the box be?

We build to your inside height, including very slim sizes for paperwork. Give us the item thickness plus any wrap.

Is a side loader cheaper than a top-opening mailer?

Often it is, since the shape is simple and flat goods need less board. Ask for both on one quote to compare.

Will I see a proof first?

Yes. A free design proof comes before any printing starts.

What if some boxes arrive damaged or misprinted?

Send photos within 10 days of delivery. We will reprint or refund the affected boxes.
