What are the best boxes for a small business?
There is no single style with this name. It is a way of ordering: boxes sized to your own products, printed with your own brand, in quantities a small shop can handle.
Most orders fall into three groups. Retail cartons sit on a shelf, mailers ship straight to a customer, and lid and base boxes suit gifts. You pick the group, and we build it around your inside size.
Many owners begin with one box for a best seller. A second size often follows once bundles or bigger items start moving. Low minimums are quoted per job, so you order what your shop actually needs.
Who orders custom boxes for a small shop?
Plenty of our customers are one or two people working from a garage, a kitchen table or a booth at weekend markets. Some sell only online. Others sell at craft fairs and need boxes that look good on a table.
They share one goal. They want a box that looks like a real brand, without a giant print run or a pallet of stock to store.
Restaurants and bakeries use them for takeout gift boxes. Small offices use them for client welcome kits.
- Etsy candle and soap makers who want a snug carton for each product
- Shopify jewelry sellers who need a neat little box that feels part of the gift
- Apparel brands that ship folded shirts in a printed mailer
- Bakers and snack makers packing cookies, fudge or tea for retail
- Subscription brands sending the same set every month
Which box style fits what I sell?
Start with how the box will travel. A paperboard carton is usually enough for shelf sales or a shopping bag. Anything that ships to a customer's door is safer in a corrugated mailer, and our custom mailer box options show how that style works.
The table below is a starting point. Our designers can suggest a different style once they see your product.
| Style | Usually made from | Works well for |
|---|---|---|
| Tuck end carton | White or kraft paperboard | Lip balm, candles and cosmetics |
| Mailer box | E or B flute corrugated | Online orders and gift sets |
| Lid and base | Paperboard or E flute | Gifts, jewelry and presentation sets |
| Pillow box | Paperboard | Light items like scarves or small accessories |
| Sleeve | Paperboard | Adding your branding to a tray or plain box |
How do I measure my product for a box?
Measure the product itself, not the package it came in. Length is the longest side, width is the shorter side, and height runs from the base to the top. Write everything down in inches.
Add about 1/8 to 1/4 in of room on each side so the item slides in easily. If you plan to include tissue, an insert or a thank you card, leave extra space for them. Our guide to measuring a box walks through each step.
If several products share one box, measure the biggest one. A single well chosen size can often cover two or three items.
Which board should a small business pick?
Paperboard is one smooth sheet. It prints sharply and feels like a store-bought carton. It comes in white or kraft and suits items that will not tumble around inside a shipping carton.
Corrugated board has a fluted layer between two flat liners. E flute is about 1/16 in (1.5 mm) and stays slim. B flute is about 1/8 in (3 mm) and cushions heavier items on longer trips. C flute sits between them at about 5/32 in (4 mm).
Most small shops get by with E flute mailers and paperboard cartons. Double wall BC flute, about 1/4 in (7 mm), is for heavy or fragile goods.
Not sure which to choose? Our single wall versus double wall guide shows when the thicker board pays off.
How should I print my boxes?
A plain kraft box with a one color logo is the simplest option, and it often looks the most honest. Two color adds a second accent. Full color CMYK prints photos, patterns and gradients edge to edge.
Inside print is popular with online sellers. A short note or pattern under the lid makes opening the box feel planned. Our Design Your Box page lets you place your logo on the flat layout before the proof.
- Uncoated kraft keeps the natural brown look
- Matte lamination feels soft and hides fingerprints
- Gloss lamination makes bold colors pop
- Spot UV adds a shiny logo on a matte box
- Foil stamping adds a metallic name or border
- Embossing raises your logo so customers can feel it
How can I pack faster with a small team?
Since the boxes ship unfolded, keep them flat and dry until you need them. Fold a day's worth each morning and stack them near your packing table.
Settle on one inside size that fits most orders. Fewer sizes mean less shelf space and fewer mix-ups on busy days.
If items rattle, an insert or some crinkle paper shred for filling gaps holds them still. Keep a small reserve of each size so a Thanksgiving gifting rush does not catch you short.
Label each stack with its box size. A sticky note on the shelf is enough, and it helps when a part-time helper packs for you.
How many box sizes should I start with?
Two is a sensible start. One size takes single items, and a larger one takes bundles or gift sets.
Lay out your ten best sellers and sort them by size. Most will fit one of two boxes with a little padding.
A third size is easy to add later, because your artwork adapts to a new shape. For ideas on common dimensions, browse the standard cardboard box sizes list. Ordering lean leaves cash free until you see which products sell.
What mistakes should new sellers avoid?
The most frequent error is ordering a box that is too big. Items slide around, the box looks half empty, and shipping costs can climb.
A snug holder fixes many problems. Take a look at corrugated inserts for fragile products if your items are delicate.
- Measuring an old box instead of the product
- Picking heavy board for light items
- Placing small text near folds, where it can crack
- Leaving no room for tissue, an insert or a flyer
- Sending a low resolution logo that prints soft

Boxes for Small Business: questions
12 answersCan I order boxes for several products at once?
Yes. Give us the inside dimensions of every product and we will price them as one job. Every size gets its own proof before printing.
Do I need finished artwork?
No. Share your logo and a rough idea, and our designers will do the layout at no cost. You check the result on the design proof.
Which style is best for online orders?
A corrugated mailer box is usually the right pick. It protects items in transit, and its hinged lid closes over a sturdy folded shape.
Can my logo go inside the lid?
Yes. Inside print is available, so the first thing a customer sees can be your name, a pattern or a short thank you.
Should a small brand choose kraft or white?
Handmade goods often suit kraft, which has a natural brown look. White board makes printed colors look brighter and cleaner.
Can you add an insert for jars or bottles?
Yes. Inserts can be cut to hold jars, bottles or sets in place. Tell us each item's size and we will plan the layout.
How fast can a small order be ready?
After you approve the proof, production takes 4–6 business days. Free tracked shipping then takes 2–3 business days.
Do the boxes arrive already assembled?
No. They ship flat to save space, and most styles fold together by hand in seconds.
Will I see my logo before anything is printed?
Yes. We send a free design proof that shows your logo and colors on the flat box shape. Printing waits for your approval.
What if some boxes arrive misprinted?
Photograph the faulty boxes and email them within 10 days. We reprint those boxes or refund them.
Can I give sizes in inches or millimeters?
Yes. Inches are the easiest, but millimeters are accepted too. Please tell us which unit your numbers use to avoid confusion.
Can you ship to a different US address?
Yes. Shipping is free to any US address you name, such as a studio, a storage unit or your home. Each shipment is tracked.
