What are cube cardboard boxes?

A cube box has six square faces. That shape changes how a product sits, how artwork wraps and how cartons stack. The footprint is the same on every layer.

We build two kinds. Slotted cartons use corrugated board and close with tape. Tuck end cubes use paperboard and close with folded flaps. If you want to compare other corrugated styles, see our corrugated box styles for shipping.

Since all sides match, you only need one number to order. Reorders are easy, and a matched set of sizes stays simple to track.

Which products fit a cube box?

Cubes work best for items about as tall as they are wide. A square box wraps those products with little wasted board and little filler.

Shops that sell mugs often pair a cube with a slim sleeve of wrap inside. For ideas on mug-specific cartons, browse our mug shipping box options.

  • Etsy candle sellers packing one glass jar
  • Toy brands selling sealed surprise figures
  • Shopify plant shops shipping small pots upright
  • Gift boutiques that sell numbered sets
  • Subscription brands with a mug and a snack
  • Bakeries boxing a single tall cake

How do I pick the right cube size?

Measure your product at its widest point and at its tallest point. Use the bigger number as your starting size. Then add padding: about 1/4 in for a snug fit, or 3/4 in if you plan to wrap the item.

Round goods are measured across the diameter. For a mug, include the handle, because the handle sets the width. If you pack two items together, measure them side by side.

A tall, narrow item wastes space in a cube. A rectangle would cost less to ship. Our guide to measuring a box the right way explains inside and outside sizes.

Which board works best for a cube?

Think about the cube's next stop. A cube that ships alone needs corrugated board. A cube that rides inside a larger carton or sits on a shelf can use paperboard.

Tall cubes need more wall strength. From about 10 in per side, start with C flute. Our corrugated flute guide for buyers shows how each thickness behaves.

B flute single wallAbout 1/8 in (3 mm)Mugs, jars and candles sent alone
C flute single wallAbout 5/32 in (4 mm)Larger cubes, from around 10 in a side
BC double wallAbout 1/4 in (7 mm)Heavy contents or cubes stacked in a pile

Can I print on every panel of a cube?

Yes. Six equal panels let artwork wrap around the box with no thin, awkward sides. Many toy brands run one picture across four faces and keep the top for a logo.

We print plain, one color, two color or full color CMYK, on the outside and the inside. Popular finishes on cubes are matte lamination with spot UV on a logo, or foil stamping on kraft. Gloss lamination and embossing are also available.

Our designers set your art on the flat layout for free. You can also place your logo in Design Your Box before you order. We check that panels line up across every fold.

Why do brands pick square boxes for sets?

A row of cubes looks like a collection. Number them, color code them or print one letter on each, and customers want the full run. That is why blind box toys and tea samplers so often use this shape.

A cube also looks balanced in photos from any angle. That helps on product listings.

Cubes turn on any face, so staff can stock them without hunting for the front. If you want a different retail shape, look at tuck end boxes for shelf display.

How do I pack a cube box?

Corners are where a cube has spare room, since round items leave gaps there. Fill them and the box acts like a solid block.

Some sellers use crinkle paper shred for void fill. For toy cubes in paperboard, a small card insert keeps the figure centered and quiet.

  1. Fold the base flaps and tape the center seam, or tuck the base closed on paperboard.
  2. Lay a bed of crinkle paper or a card pad on the bottom.
  3. Stand the product upright in the middle.
  4. Fill the four corners so nothing can slide sideways.
  5. Close the top, tape across the seam and put the label on one face.

What mistakes should I avoid when ordering cubes?

The most common slip is sending outside sizes. Board thickness then eats into the inside, and a mug that should fit sits above the flaps.

Another is choosing a cube for a long, thin item because it looks neat. You pay for extra filler and extra shipping weight. A third is using paperboard for a cube that travels alone. It looks fine on the bench but can crush in transit. Read our notes on single wall versus double wall boxes if you are unsure.

Finally, check logo direction on the proof. On a cube, a sideways logo is easy to miss until the boxes are folded.

How long does a cube box order take?

We email a free design proof first. Nothing is printed until you approve it. Production then takes 4 to 6 business days from approval.

Shipping is free and tracked to any US address, and transit takes 2 to 3 business days. Boxes arrive flat and banded. See our shipping details for US orders for more.

Cube Cardboard Boxes: questions

12 answers
Must every side of a cube box match?

Yes, that is what makes it a cube. If you need one side longer, we make a rectangular box instead.

Can I give the size in millimeters?

Yes. Inches are standard, but we also accept millimeters and convert them for the proof.

How small can a cube box be?

We make cubes to the size you need, including small toy sizes near 3 in. Tell us the item and the quote will confirm it.

Is a cube strong enough to ship a mug?

One mug ships well in a B flute corrugated cube with wrap around it. For several mugs, ask about BC double wall.

Can each face carry different artwork?

Yes. All six panels can have their own design, and our designers place each one on the layout for you.

Do paperboard cubes need tape?

No. Tuck flaps at the base and the lid hold them shut. Corrugated slotted cubes are sealed with packing tape.

Can you put dividers inside a cube?

Yes. Corrugated cross dividers split the space into four or more cells for jars or bottles.

Can I check how my art lines up on all six cube panels before printing?

Yes. A free design proof is emailed to you showing your artwork across every panel and fold, and we wait for your approval before anything prints.

Can I order plain kraft cubes without print?

Yes. Plain kraft corrugated cubes are a common order, and many sellers add a branded sticker or label later.

Do cube boxes stack well?

They do, because every layer has the same square footprint. Use double wall board for the bottom of a tall stack.

Is shipping really free?

Yes. Shipping is free and tracked to any US address, with 2 to 3 business days in transit.

Can I print inside a cube box?

Yes. Inside print is available in one color, two color or full color, and it suits gift and toy cubes well.
