What are media mailer boxes?
A media mailer is a printed box made to be opened on camera. Brands send it to editors, creators and partners who may share the unboxing with their followers.
The style is a tuck-front mailer. The lid hinges at the back, two dust flaps fold inside, and the front panel tucks into the base.
The print is what sets it apart. The outside carries your artwork on every face, and the underside of the lid holds a message, a pattern or a second color.
Who sends media mailer boxes in the US?
Any team that wants the first look to land well. One box can be seen by hundreds of viewers, so it pays to finish every side.
- Beauty and skincare labels sending new shades to creators
- Coffee, hot sauce and snack brands mailing launch samples to editors
- PR agencies running kits for several clients at once
- Book publishers sending advance copies with extras tucked in
- Subscription brands introducing a limited drop to top members
- Offices and event teams sending welcome packs to speakers and guests
What inside size does a press kit need?
Lay out the whole kit the way you want it seen. Take your numbers from the whole group of items together, never from single pieces.
If the items sit in a cut paperboard tray, measure the tray instead. Its footprint and height set the inside size.
Allow about 1/4 in of headroom above the tallest item for tissue or a card. Too much space lets the kit slide. Too little bows the lid.
Unsure how to take the numbers? Our guide to measuring a box covers inside length, width and height.
Which board suits a printed media mailer?
Pick white board when your artwork is bright, since colors look cleaner on a white liner. Kraft gives a softer, earthy look for natural or handmade brands.
E flute (about 1/16 in, 1.5 mm) prints sharpest and folds neatly. B flute (about 1/8 in, 3 mm) adds cushion when glass is involved. The corrugated board flute guide explains the differences.
| Kit contents | Suggested board | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Cards, booklets, light samples | E flute, white | Sharp print, low weight |
| Lip products, serums, small jars | E or B flute, white | Pair with a paperboard insert |
| Glass bottles or candles | B flute, white or kraft | Use a corrugated insert |
| Heavy or mixed kits | C flute | About 5/32 in, stiffer walls |
What print and finishes can I choose?
Most media mailers use full color CMYK outside and a second print pass inside. Simple designs can run in one or two colors and still look sharp.
Matte lamination softens glare under ring lights. Gloss makes color pop. Spot UV can highlight a logo or a pattern.
Foil stamping and embossing work best on one feature, such as the brand name on the lid. Want art on both faces? Read about double sided printed mailers.
Does a media mailer need an insert?
In most cases, yes. An insert gives each item a fixed spot, so every kit opens the same way.
Paperboard trays suit light items and can be printed. Corrugated inserts grip bottles, jars and anything with weight. See mailer boxes with inserts for the options.
- List every item with its size, including caps and pumps.
- Sketch how the items should sit when the lid lifts.
- Say if you want the insert printed or left plain.
- We size the insert first, then shape the box around it.
- Check both on the free design proof before you approve.
How should I pack a press kit for shipping?
Pack one sample kit first and give it a gentle shake. If anything shifts, add tissue or crinkle paper before you pack the rest.
Put a printed card on top so it is the first thing seen. Close the lid and seal the tuck with a sticker.
For long trips, slide the mailer into a plain outer carton. The printed finish then arrives free of scuffs and labels. Our cheapest way to ship boxes guide helps you compare options.
What mistakes should I avoid with media mailers?
The most common one is designing only the outside. The underside of the lid is the first thing people see, so treat it as a main panel.
Another is running key words across a fold. Keep logos and text inside the panels marked on your proof. Check the lid half open too, since that is often the frame people film.
Ordering before the products are final causes trouble as well. If a bottle size changes late, the insert may no longer fit it.
Last, dark all-over print shows scuffs. A matte laminate helps, and so does a plain outer carton for the trip.
How long does a media mailer order take?
Plan backward from your send date, because embargoes and launch days rarely move. After you approve the proof, production takes 4–6 business days.
Free tracked shipping to any US address then adds 2–3 business days. Leave extra time for artwork changes, since kits often go through a few rounds with the client.
A simple plan works well: brief and sizes in week one, proof rounds in week two, then production and transit. Our shipping page has the full details. If your date is fixed, tell us when you ask for a quote and we will flag anything tight.
Media mailer or a box inside a box?
Some launches use a printed media mailer alone. Others place a smaller printed box, such as a two piece lid gift box, inside a plain outer carton.
A single mailer weighs less and ships for less. It also gives a quick reveal, because the printed lid is the outside of the package.
The box-in-a-box route protects the print better and feels more formal. It suits high-value kits and long journeys.
If you cannot decide, ask us to quote both styles side by side. Compare unit cost, packed weight and shipping cost, then pick the one that fits the campaign.

Media Mailer Boxes: questions
12 answersHow is a media mailer different from a plain mailer box?
The structure is the same tuck-front style. A media mailer is printed all over, often inside as well, and usually holds a fitted insert for a press or launch kit.
Can you print the underside of the lid?
Yes. Inside print covers the lid and the walls. It can be one color, two colors or full color CMYK.
Should a press kit box be white or kraft?
White board makes full color art look brighter. Kraft has a warmer, earthy tone and suits simpler designs with fewer colors.
Can every item in my kit get its own slot?
Yes. We can cut a paperboard or corrugated insert with one slot per product, sized to your measurements.
Which finish looks best on camera?
Matte lamination cuts glare under ring lights. Spot UV or foil on the logo adds a detail that catches the light as the lid lifts.
Can the boxes ship straight to my creators?
We ship the finished boxes to one US address of your choice, free and tracked. For creator-by-creator sends, you pack and ship from there.
How deep should a media mailer be?
Most kits fit in 3 to 5 in of depth. Measure your tallest item and add about 1/4 in for tissue or a card.
Will dark print scuff in transit?
It can. A matte laminate helps, and on long trips we suggest packing the printed box inside a plain outer carton.
Do media mailers need glue to assemble?
No. They arrive flat and fold by hand, with the front panel tucking into the base.
Can your designers help with the kit artwork?
Yes. Before anything is printed, you get a digital proof to review, and our layout help costs nothing.
When should I place an order to hit a launch date?
Allow time for proofing, then 4–6 business days for production and 2–3 business days of tracked transit.
Can I ship a media mailer without an outer box?
Yes, many brands do. An outer carton is worth adding if the box is dark, glossy or traveling a long way.
