What is a window box?
It is a carton with a piece of one panel cut out, so the contents show through. The same cutting die shapes the box and the window.
That keeps every opening identical from the first box to the last. Edges come out crisp, and the window always lands in the same spot.
We make windows on tuck end cartons with a front window, on lidded trays and on sleeves. Pick the style that suits how you pack.
Shoppers ask fewer questions when they can see the real item. Staff also spot a wrong flavor or color before the box leaves the counter.
Who buys window boxes?
Any seller whose product looks good enough to speak for itself. A glossy brownie often beats a printed photo.
- Bakeries and dessert shops boxing brownies, cookies and macarons
- Etsy and Shopify soap and candle makers who want color and texture visible
- Toy, craft and hobby sellers showing the item inside the pack
- Delis, cafes and farmers market stands packing granola, cheese and jam
- Gift brands selling small sets for birthdays, weddings or Easter
Where should the window go?
Picture how the box sits when a customer meets it. Flat on a counter or in a display case, a lid window gives the best view.
Standing on a shelf, the front panel is the better choice. A window that wraps a corner reveals more, but it softens that corner a little.
Leave about 5/8 in of board around the opening. That border keeps the box square and gives your logo room. A hinged lid box is a natural fit for a top window.
| Window position | How the box sits | Typical product |
|---|---|---|
| Lid top | Flat on a counter | Cookies, brownies, chocolates |
| Front panel | Upright on a shelf | Soap, toys, tea blends |
| Side panel | Standing on end in a rack | Brushes, pens, slim gifts |
| Wrapped corner | Angled on a stand | Celebration cakes and premium sets |
Should the window stay open or get clear film?
An open cutout is the simplest option. It works when the product is already wrapped, such as bagged cookies or soap in paper.
Clear film is smarter for loose goods. It keeps crumbs in, fingers off and small parts from sliding out.
Film adds a production step, so mention it when you request your quote. To send finished boxes to customers, protect them in a custom shipping box sized to fit.
How do I choose the right size?
Measure your product in its final wrapping: length, width and height. Add about 1/8 in so it slides in without catching on the window edge.
Next, decide on the opening. A window covering roughly half the panel shows the product well and still leaves the box rigid.
Not sure how to take the numbers? Follow our guide on measuring the inside of a box. We accept inches or millimeters.
Which board is best for window boxes?
White paperboard is the usual pick for bakery and gift boxes. It prints sharply and frames the window cleanly.
Kraft paperboard suits natural, handmade and farm stand goods. A one color logo looks good on that brown surface.
Jars and heavier sets need more backbone. E flute is about 1/16 in thick and holds its shape around a cutout. C flute is an option for large display boxes, though the window edge looks thicker.
Tell us what goes inside and roughly how heavy it is. We will recommend one board on your quote. The flute guide for corrugated board explains the differences.
How should I print around the window?
Let the product be the star. A logo above or below the opening, plus a short name, is usually plenty.
We print plain, one color, two color or full color CMYK. Inside print is also available, and it shows through the window like a backdrop.
Matte lamination looks soft, gloss adds shine, and foil stamping or spot UV makes a logo stand out. Leave the kraft uncoated for a handmade feel. See more custom printed box options if you want a bolder look.
What mistakes should I avoid?
- Placing the window where a fold line or tuck flap crosses it
- Cutting an opening so big that the box sags
- Leaving empty space behind the glass, so shoppers see mostly cardboard
- Putting small text right at the cut edge, where it can look cramped
- Leaving loose, unwrapped food behind an open window in a busy shop
How do I pack a window box?
Turn the product so its best side faces the window. A small riser or a sheet of tissue underneath lifts it closer to the opening.
With baked goods, set the item on a thin board first, then slide it in. Close the lid without pressing on the window.
A corrugated insert cut to the product holds fragile items steady. Keep stacks of filled boxes low so panels do not bow.

Can one window box cover seasonal ranges?
Yes, and it keeps costs down. Many sellers order a plain or lightly printed box and swap only a ribbon, sticker or tape for each occasion.
The same carton can hold Valentine's Day chocolates, Easter cookies and Halloween treats. Matching colored packing tape for each season adds a quick change.
If you prefer fresh artwork each time, keep the window size and spot unchanged. Your packing routine stays the same.

Window Boxes: questions
12 answersWhat shapes can the window be?
Rectangles, circles and ovals are the most common. We can also cut a custom outline such as a heart or leaf. Avoid very thin points and narrow board bridges.
Does the window come open or covered?
Either one. An open cutout is standard, and clear film can be fitted behind it if you ask for that when requesting your quote.
Can I add windows to more than one panel?
Yes. Two windows on opposite sides, or one that wraps a corner, are both possible. Each extra opening lowers stiffness a bit.
Are window boxes good for cookies and cakes?
Bakers use them all the time. A lid window suits flat treats, while a front window works for slices standing upright.
Does a window make the box weaker?
Slightly, which is why we leave a border of board around it. For heavier goods, choose E flute over thin paperboard.
Can I print inside a window box so the pattern shows through the cutout?
Yes. Inside print appears through the opening like a backdrop, so plan the pattern and the window position together.
What is the best window box for soap?
A kraft tuck end carton with the window on its front panel is a popular pick for a single bar. It shows the soap color and keeps the bar tidy.
Do window boxes arrive flat?
Yes. They ship flat with the window already cut, so you fold them up when you are ready to pack.
Can I ship products inside window boxes?
They are built for display. For shipping, place them inside an outer corrugated box with some padding around them.
How much do window boxes cost?
Pricing starts from $0.30 a box. The exact figure arrives in your emailed quote, because size, board and film all change the cost.
Will I see a proof of the window cutout before anything is printed?
Yes. Your free design proof marks the size and position of the window next to the artwork. Nothing is printed or cut until you approve it.
What if the window is cut in the wrong place?
Contact us within 10 days and send photos. A misprint, damage or defect is reprinted or refunded.
