Quick answer
What are vinyl record boxes?
Vinyl record boxes are corrugated mailers or cartons made to hug a record sleeve. The tight fit and stiff walls keep the jacket from bowing and the corners from denting. Deeper cartons handle store restocks and box sets.

What are vinyl record boxes?
They are corrugated mailers and cartons cut to the square footprint of a record sleeve. The disc lies flat, and the walls stay stiff enough that the jacket cannot flex.
Most orders are flat LP mailers. They fold around the record in a few seconds and close with tuck flaps or tape. Larger cartons cover restocks, convention stock and box sets, much like our media mailer boxes do for smaller discs.
Who orders custom record mailers?
Anyone who ships vinyl more than a few times a month. Collectors notice a dented corner right away, and a bent jacket often ends in a refund request.
Etsy and Shopify sellers usually pick plain kraft and put the savings into stiffer board. Bands and labels lean toward print, since the box is the first thing a fan holds.
Distributors and pressing plants move test pressings and finished stock in volume. They often order mailers and bulk cartons in the same job.
- Independent record stores with an online shop
- Small labels sending out new releases
- Bands selling straight to fans
- Collectors and dealers listing on marketplaces
- Pressing plants returning test pressings
- Subscription clubs shipping a record every month
What size box fits a 12 inch record?
A 12 inch jacket measures about 12.4 in square. Add roughly 1/8 to 3/16 in to each side so the record slides in without wobbling. An inside size near 12.5 × 12.5 in is a sound starting point.
Depth changes with the format. If you are unsure how inside and outside numbers differ, read our guide to measuring a box before you send dimensions.
- Measure the jacket, including any shrink wrap.
- Stack the records the way a customer will receive them.
- Measure the height of the stack, plus any pads.
- Add 1/8 to 3/16 in to length and width.
- Send the inside size and your quantity.
Which board keeps vinyl from bending?
For one LP, stiffness matters more than thickness. E flute keeps the mailer slim, and fold-in pads add rigidity where the record needs it. For several discs, B flute gives more strength at the corners. The corrugated board flute guide explains how each type behaves.
Store restock cartons are a different job. They carry dense stacks, so BC double wall is the usual pick.
Heat deserves a mention. Board cannot protect a disc left in a hot truck, so tell customers in summer to bring packages indoors quickly.
| Format | Suggested board | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Single 7 inch | E flute, about 1/16 in (1.5 mm) | Slim and light for small orders |
| Single 12 inch LP | E flute with pads, or B flute | Flat, stiff and quick to fold |
| Double LP or gatefold | B flute, about 1/8 in (3 mm) | Extra strength at the corners |
| Bulk restock cartons | BC double wall, about 1/4 in (7 mm) | Handles heavy, dense stacks |
Should the record ship inside or outside its jacket?
Many sellers slip the disc out of the outer jacket and place it behind the jacket in its inner sleeve. If the box lands on an edge, the disc then cannot punch through the jacket seam.
Whichever method you choose, keep the record flat and centered. Add a pad on each side of the stack if the mailer has spare depth.
Never ship records on edge in a deep carton. That is how corners crush and discs warp.
Can I print my label artwork on the box?
Yes. Print can be plain, one color, two color or full color CMYK, on the outside, the inside or both. A big square panel is a natural home for album art or a label logo.
Bands often run the release artwork across the outside for limited editions. Stores usually print a logo outside and a thank-you line inside. Lay it out first in Design Your Box, then approve the free proof.
- Uncoated kraft with a single black ink
- Matte lamination for album art reproductions
- Gloss lamination for bright full color designs
- A label name in foil stamping on a box set
- Embossing or spot UV for special editions
Do you make boxes for vinyl box sets?
Yes. A box set needs a deeper carton sized around the outer case, with room for a pad above and below. These are usually made in B flute or double wall boxes for heavier sets.
If the set already has a printed slipcase, a plain outer carton is often enough. If not, a printed box can serve as the presentation case too.
Colored and picture discs deserve the same care as black vinyl. They tend to be limited runs, so collectors inspect them closely on arrival.
What else can go in a record mailer?
Many sellers add extras next to the disc. A poster, lyric sheet, sticker or download card all lie flat inside an LP mailer without changing its size.
If a bundle also holds a T-shirt or a cassette, the box needs extra depth. Tell us everything going in, and we will size the box so the record rests on the base with softer items above. Custom corrugated inserts and pads can hold each item in place.
For merch-heavy orders, a slightly deeper mailer with a pad over the record often works better than forcing everything into the slimmest size.
What damages records in transit?
Most split seams and bent corners trace back to the same few habits. Watch for these.
- Using a box far larger than the record
- Leaving the disc inside the jacket on a heavy order
- Choosing a soft padded bag over rigid board
- Skipping pads when the mailer has spare depth
- Packing records upright in a deep carton
- Mixing 7 inch and 12 inch formats in one box

Vinyl Record Boxes: questions
12 answersWhat size mailer fits a 12 inch LP?
About 12.5 × 12.5 in inside suits a single 12 inch LP. Send your jacket size and we will set the exact fit.
Can you make mailers for 7 inch singles?
Yes. A 7 inch mailer is often near 7.5 × 7.5 in inside, depending on the sleeve you use.
Will a double album fit in one mailer?
Yes, if the depth allows for the gatefold or both records. Give us the stack thickness when you ask for a quote.
Should I take the record out of its jacket before shipping?
Many sellers do, placing the disc behind the jacket. It helps prevent seam splits if a box takes a hard knock.
Do record mailers need pads?
Pads add stiffness and fill spare depth. They are worth using on single LP mailers and on any box with extra room.
Which board is best for shipping vinyl?
Most single and double LPs ship well in B flute, or in E flute with pads. Bulk cartons are better in BC double wall.
Can you print album art on the mailer?
Yes. Full color CMYK can cover the whole box, and inside print is available too.
Can you box a multi-disc collector set?
Yes. We size a deeper carton around the set and leave room for pads.
Do I have to fold the record mailers myself?
Yes, but it takes seconds. The mailers arrive flat and wrap around the record by hand.
How long will my order take?
Production runs 4–6 business days after proof approval. Free tracked shipping then takes 2–3 business days.
What if my record mailers arrive with a print error or a crushed corner?
Send photos within 10 days of delivery. We will reprint or refund the affected mailers.
Will your designers help me set up my label artwork?
Yes. Our designers give free layout help, and you will see the result on your free proof before anything is printed.
