What are gray board boxes?
Gray board is a solid sheet made by pressing paper fiber into a dense, flat panel. It has no wavy flute layer inside. Push on a wall and you will feel almost no give.
Because of that stiffness, the boxes are shaped and assembled before they reach you. You open the carton, lift the lid and start packing.
They sit in our full cardboard box range next to folding and corrugated styles. Pick them when the box itself is part of what you sell.
Who buys gray board boxes?
Mostly people who want a box that gets opened again and again. A shipping carton gets cut open and tossed. A gray board box lives on a shelf.
Small shops like the weight too. A solid lid tells a customer you took care, and that matters for an Etsy or Shopify gift line. Our page for small business box orders covers low runs.
- Wedding and portrait photographers delivering prints
- Collectors filing letters, cards and magazines
- Subscription brands with a keepsake box
- Offices and schools storing labeled documents
- Gift sellers packing birthday and Valentine's Day sets
Which gray board box style should I pick?
Four styles cover most orders. Each opens in a different way, so think about how your customer will use the box.
When in doubt, start with lid and base. It stacks neatly and the lid can carry a label. Book style works well for a gift opened in front of the recipient.
| Style | How it opens | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Lid and base | Lid lifts straight off | Gifts, photos, stacked storage |
| Book style | Cover swings open on a hinge | Albums, presentation sets |
| Drop-front | Front panel folds down | Files and items that slide out |
| Hinged lid | Lid stays joined at the back | Cards, media, shelf display |
Should I choose gray board or corrugated?
Corrugated suits a box that ships, gets used once and goes to recycling. It is light and folds flat. Our corrugated box styles are the better pick for that job.
Gray board answers a different need. Edges stay sharp, lids stay flat, and the surface takes print, foil and embossing cleanly.
The cost is storage space. Made-up boxes cannot fold flat, so a large run needs real shelf room. Plan for that before you order.
How do I measure for a gray board box?
Give us the inside size you need. Thick walls make the outside noticeably larger, and we work that out from the board.
Lay your item flat and measure length, width and height. For prints and papers, add about 1/8 to 3/16 in on length and width so they lift out easily. For a stack, press it down lightly and measure the whole pile. If you pack a book or frame, measure at its thickest point.
Our guide on measuring a box the right way shows common slips.
Can gray board boxes be printed?
Yes, though many buyers leave the natural gray bare. It looks calm and professional, and it hides scuffs well.
For branding, we print one color, two color or full color CMYK on the outside, and inside print is available too. Foil stamping and embossing look sharp on this dense surface. Matte or gloss lamination and spot UV are also available.
Our designers help with the lid layout at no charge. You get a free proof before anything is printed. See custom printed box options for more ideas.
Do I need an insert inside the box?
A stack of prints or papers fills the box by itself. Loose items are different. A rigid box gives them room to slide and knock together.
For jewelry, small bottles or mixed gift sets, a cut insert holds each piece still. We can make one from card or thin corrugated. Browse folding carton inserts for gifts to see common layouts.
How should I store and ship gray board boxes?
Gray board is tough to handle, but it is not meant to travel bare. A shipping carton protects the finish you paid for. Our shipping box styles work well as outer cartons.
- Store empty boxes with lids on, in a dry spot off the floor.
- Fill the box and close the lid gently so corners stay square.
- Set it inside a corrugated outer carton.
- Pad every side so nothing shifts in the gap.
- Tape and label the outer carton only, never the gray board box.
What mistakes should I avoid?
The biggest one is ordering by outside size. With thick walls, a box can shrink inside by a quarter inch each way, and letter size sheets will not lie flat.
Another is a lid that is too deep. A full-height lid looks smart but can grip a tightly packed base. A lid about a third of the height is easier to live with.
Skipping the thumb notch is a third. A snug lid with no notch is hard to lift. Finally, never stick a shipping label on the lid, because it marks the surface for good. For long-term filing, our cardboard storage box range may fit better.
How long does a gray board box order take?
We send a free design proof first. Production then runs 4 to 6 business days after you approve the proof.
Shipping is free and tracked to any US address, and transit takes 2 to 3 business days. These boxes arrive assembled and take up more room than flat cartons, so clear some space.

Gray Board Boxes: questions
12 answersHow is gray board different from corrugated board?
Gray board is solid and pressed, so it feels hard and smooth. Corrugated has a fluted middle layer and weighs less for its strength.
Do gray board boxes arrive flat?
Usually no. They are rigid, so they come assembled and ready to fill.
Can I get a hinged lid?
Yes. We make hinged lid and book style boxes, plus the classic lift-off lid and base.
Is gray board good for storing photos?
Many photographers use it. The box keeps prints flat and shaded. Send the print size and we will size the box to match.
Can you put my logo on the lid?
Yes. A lid logo can be printed, foil stamped or embossed. You approve a free proof before production.
Can the inside be white instead of gray?
Yes. Inside print can be white or a brand color, which contrasts nicely with the gray outside.
Will a gray board box survive shipping alone?
It is not designed to. Put it in a corrugated outer carton with padding on all sides.
Can the base have a thumb notch?
Yes. A half-moon notch makes a snug lid easy to lift, and it is a popular choice on lid and base boxes.
What sizes do you make?
Every box is made to your inside length, width and height in inches. Letter size and 8 × 10 are frequent requests.
Can you add inserts?
Yes. We cut card or corrugated inserts to your items. Send the item sizes and we will suggest a layout.
How soon will my boxes arrive?
Production is 4 to 6 business days after proof approval. Free tracked shipping then takes 2 to 3 business days.
Can I order plain gray boxes with no print?
Yes. Plain gray boxes are a common order for storage, filing and simple gift packing.
