What is a cardboard storage box?

A storage box is meant to be opened again and again. A shipping carton only has to survive one trip. That difference shapes the whole design.

Ours have a base, a lift-off lid and hand holes at the ends. The board is chosen to carry weight on a shelf or in a stack for months.

Every size is cut to order, like the rest of our made-to-size cardboard box range.

Why choose a lid over taped flaps?

A slotted carton closes with tape. Each time you pull the tape off, it rips a strip of paper from the flap. After a few openings the top will not sit flat.

A lid simply lifts off and drops back on. No tape, no knife, no damage. You can also peek inside by raising one corner.

If the contents will sit untouched for a long time, look at archive boxes for long-term records. Those are sized for paper files.

Who uses cardboard storage boxes?

Buyers range from Etsy shops to hospital supply rooms. They all want the same thing: labeled boxes that stack to one height.

Many customers order a mix, such as a few large boxes for bulky items plus a run of small ones for parts that always go missing.

  • Shopify sellers sorting inventory by product on warehouse racking
  • Subscription brands holding next month's inserts and extras
  • Restaurants and caterers storing menus, linens and dry goods
  • Offices boxing tax records, spare supplies and old equipment
  • Families packing for a move or a garage clean-out

What size storage box do I need?

Start with the shelf, not the contents. Measure the shelf depth and the clear height between shelves. Then allow a little slack so the box slides out without catching.

Weight matters too. A box of books is heavy long before it looks full, so books suit smaller sizes. Bedding and linens can go in larger ones without straining the hand holes.

Send us the inside length, width and height in inches. Our guide on how to measure a box shows exactly where to place the tape.

Single wall or double wall for storage?

Stacking decides this. The box at the bottom carries everything above it for months. Light goods and short stacks suit single wall. Heavy goods and tall stacks need double wall.

Our comparison of single wall versus double wall boxes goes deeper if you are unsure.

Can I add dividers to a storage box?

Yes. A corrugated grid sits in the base and splits it into cells. Each cell holds one item upright, so nothing tips over or rattles.

Online sellers use grids for candles, bottles and jars. Clinics use them for vials. Tell us your item size and we set the cell count.

For more detail, see corrugated dividers cut to fit.

Can I print on storage boxes?

Most customers print at least a label panel. One color with lines for contents, date and shelf location saves a lot of searching later.

We print one color, two color or full color CMYK, inside and outside. Uncoated kraft keeps a stockroom look. Matte or gloss lamination suits white board in public spaces. Spot UV, foil stamping and embossing are available too.

Our designers help with layout for free, and you approve a proof before anything is printed. For retail packaging with heavier branding, see fully custom printed boxes.

What is the best way to load a storage box for long life?

Corners carry most of the load. An offset stack presses on the middle of the walls below, and that is where boxes give way.

  1. Load the heaviest items first, flat against the base.
  2. Fill empty space with paper or lighter goods so nothing slides.
  3. Leave a little room below the rim so the lid closes flat.
  4. Write the contents, date and shelf spot on the label panel.
  5. Stack heavy boxes at the bottom and line up the corners.

What causes storage boxes to fail?

Overfilling is the top cause. A bulging lid rests on the contents instead of the walls, so the box above pushes straight down on your goods.

Moisture comes next. Corrugated board softens in a damp basement or garage, so keep boxes off bare concrete. A shelf or pallet solves it.

Mixed sizes also cause trouble. Pick two or three sizes that stack together and your stockroom stays neat.

Last, open hand holes are a poor fit for tiny loose parts such as screws or beads. Ask for closed holes with a punch-in flap. If you would rather have carry grips, see cardboard boxes with handles.

When will my storage boxes ship, and do they arrive flat?

You get a free design proof first. After you approve it, production takes 4–6 business days.

Shipping is free and tracked to any US address. Transit takes 2–3 business days. Read the full shipping details for more.

Yes, they arrive flat. Bases and lids come in separate bundles. Fold the base up by hand, then do the lid the same way.

Flat boxes are easy to keep. Store spares behind a door and assemble them only when you need them.

Cardboard Storage Boxes: questions

12 answers
Do the storage boxes come with lids?

Yes. Each box has a separate lid that lifts off whole, so you can open and close it many times without wrecking any flaps.

Can the hand holes go on the long sides?

Yes. Most people choose the short ends. Tell us if your boxes will be pulled sideways off a shelf.

Are these boxes strong enough for books?

Choose BC double wall for books and keep the box fairly small. Paper adds up fast, and a smaller box is easier to lift.

Can I get white storage boxes?

Yes. We make them with a white outer face, which suits offices, shops and clinics.

Can you print a label panel on every box?

Yes. A one color panel with lines for contents and date is a popular, low-cost choice.

Do you make divider grids?

Yes. We cut corrugated grids to fit the inside of the box, with as many cells as you need.

Will the boxes stack safely?

They stack well when sizes match and corners line up. Use double wall for the bottom boxes in a tall stack.

Is a damp basement okay for storage boxes?

Not ideal. Corrugated board softens with moisture, so use shelves or pallets and avoid bare concrete floors.

Do the boxes arrive assembled?

No. Bases and lids ship flat in bundles and fold up by hand in seconds.

How do I size boxes for warehouse racking?

Measure the clear depth and height of each rack slot and send those numbers. We make the box to fit.

Can I order two or three sizes that stack together?

Yes. Many customers pick a small set of sizes that share a footprint so shelves stay tidy.

What if my storage boxes arrive damaged?

Email photos within 10 days of arrival. We reprint or refund the affected boxes.
