What is a half slotted container?
Picture a standard shipping carton, then remove the top flaps. What remains is a deep tray with straight walls and a foldable base. The trade code for this style is FEFCO 0200.
Nothing blocks the opening, so people can drop items in and lift them out in seconds. That is why HSCs turn up in so many stockrooms and back offices.
You can run one open, cover it with a lid, or stack it on a shelf as a bin. Our corrugated and shipping box range shows the other carton styles we make.
Who buys half slotted containers?
Mostly people who open a box again and again. A seller who packs fifty orders a day wants a bin that stays open. A shipper wants the opposite.
Many of these boxes stay in use for months, so firm walls matter more than a thin board.
- Warehouse teams running open pick bins
- Offices keeping files and records under a lid
- Restaurants and caterers moving glasses in divided cases
- Farm stands and produce packers handling loose fruit
- Etsy and Shopify sellers staging inventory on shelves
- Subscription brands kitting items before final packing
Can I get a lid for my HSC?
Yes. The lid is a separate shallow tray that slips over the open top. We cut it from the same board as the base so the pair match.
You choose the lid depth. A lid about 2 to 3 in deep keeps dust out and lifts off easily. A full depth lid covers the whole base and doubles the wall on every side.
If you want other closures, browse cardboard boxes with lids too.
Can I add hand holes or dividers?
Yes to both. Hand holes are die-cut in the short ends, which helps when staff carry a loaded case across a room.
Dividers turn the carton into a cell case. A corrugated grid drops in from above, and each bottle, jar or glass gets its own pocket.
Holes slightly weaken the end panels, so we place them a safe distance below the rim. Heavy loads do better in double wall board, which keeps the ends from tearing.
Grids can run the full height or stop short, leaving room for a sheet of paper on top. See corrugated box dividers cut to fit for layouts.
How do I measure for a half slotted container?
Start with what goes inside. Give us the inside length, width and height in inches, or in millimeters if you prefer.
If you want a lid, send the base size only. We cut the lid slightly larger so it slides on cleanly. Shelf fit matters too, so measure the shelf depth before you decide.
Our guide to measuring a box shows exactly where to put the tape.
- Decide if the box will stay open, take a lid, or hold a divider grid.
- Measure your items at their widest points, or the whole grid of items.
- Add a small gap so things lift out without sticking.
- If a lid is part of the plan, give us its depth along with the inside length, width and height.
Which board works best for an open-top carton?
With no top flaps, the rim has no extra layer, so board choice matters more. C flute single wall, about 5/32 in (4 mm), handles most light goods.
Heavy or stacked cases suit BC double wall, about 1/4 in (7 mm). B flute, about 1/8 in (3 mm), fits small bins and trays.
A lid stiffens the rim, so a lidded case can often use lighter board than an open tray of the same size. Our single wall versus double wall comparison explains the trade-off.
| Use | Board | Lid advice |
|---|---|---|
| Parts bins and shelf trays | B flute single wall | Usually no lid |
| Files and office records | C flute single wall | Shallow slip-on lid |
| Glasses with dividers | BC double wall | Shallow or full lid |
| Heavy stock stacked high | BC double wall | Full depth lid |
Can half slotted containers be printed?
Yes. Typical print includes this-side-up arrows, content labels, bin numbers and logos. Choose one color, two color or full color CMYK, inside and outside, on kraft or white board.
Printing only the lid keeps cost down and leaves the base plain. For the finish, pick from matte or gloss lamination, embossing, foil stamping and spot UV.

What mistakes should I avoid with HSCs?
Do not send an HSC out alone with loose goods. An open top lets items fall out and lets dust in.
Avoid a base much taller than the goods if you plan to stack. The empty band near the rim has no support, so a lid resting there can buckle.
Test dividers against real items, not a drawing. A glass with a wide rim may need a bigger cell than its base suggests.
Tell us if a snug lid matters. A loose lid can slide off when someone carries the case by one end.
HSC or RSC: which one do I need?
They share the same base. The top is the only difference. An RSC has four flaps that meet in the middle and close with tape, while an HSC stays open or takes a lid.
Choose an RSC for one-way shipping to a customer. Choose an HSC for storage, picking and anything opened often. For the closed version, see regular slotted containers made to size.

Half Slotted Containers: questions
12 answersHow is a half slotted container different from a regular slotted container?
An HSC has flaps on the bottom only, so the top is open. A regular slotted container has flaps on both ends and closes with tape.
Do you make lids for half slotted containers?
Yes. We cut a separate slip-on lid from matching board, either shallow or full depth, to fit your base.
Can I turn an HSC upside down over a tray?
Yes. Some buyers use a second HSC as a deep cover over a base. Tell us the sizes and we will allow for the fit.
Can you cut hand holes in the ends?
Yes. We die-cut hand holes in the short ends. For heavy loads we suggest double wall board so the ends hold up.
Can you make dividers for bottles, jars and glasses?
Yes. Corrugated grids are cut to your item sizes and drop in from the open top.
Which board suits file storage with a lid?
C flute single wall is a good start for files and office records. Move up to BC double wall if boxes will be stacked.
Can I print the lid and leave the base plain?
Yes. Many buyers print only the lid to save cost. You can also print both parts, inside and outside.
Do half slotted containers arrive flat?
Yes. They ship flat with the corner joint already glued. Fold the bottom flaps, tape them, and the box is ready.
How much do half slotted containers cost?
Pricing starts from $0.30 a box. We email the exact figure in your quote, including any lid, holes or dividers.
What is the smallest run of half slotted containers I can order?
Minimums for half slotted containers are low and quoted per job. Send your base size and quantity, plus any lid or dividers, and we will confirm in the emailed quote.
How soon will my half slotted containers be made and delivered?
Your half slotted containers go into production for 4 to 6 business days once you approve the proof. Free tracked shipping to any US address then takes 2 to 3 business days.
What happens if my boxes arrive damaged or misprinted?
Email us within 10 days with photos. We reprint the order or refund you.
