What are round cardboard boxes?

A round cardboard box is a circular container with a lid that slips over the top edge. The shape comes from the old hat box, and the nickname stuck. Today the same style holds flowers, candles, cookies, beauty sets and boutique gifts.

The lid lifts straight up, so opening one feels like a small event. That is the main reason brands choose it over a plain square carton.

Who orders round boxes in the US?

Round boxes stand out because most packaging is square. A buyer who sees a circle on a doorstep or a counter notices it first. Shop owners also like how well they photograph for social posts. If you are just starting out, our page on packaging for growing small businesses covers the basics.

  • Florists and flower subscription brands
  • Bakeries, candy shops and dessert makers
  • Candle, soap and home fragrance sellers
  • Bridal shops, milliners and accessory labels
  • Etsy and Shopify gift sellers
  • Corporate gifting and holiday client gifts

Round box or cylinder box: which one fits?

Both are circular, but they do different jobs. A round box is wide and low. A cylinder is tall and narrow. If your product stands upright, such as a bottle or a rolled print, look at our tall cardboard cylinder box options instead.

The table below shows how the two compare.

How do I measure for a round box?

We size round boxes by the inside diameter and inside height. The lid is then made to sit over the outside of the wall. For help with taking any inside measurement, see our guide to measuring a box.

  1. Measure your item across its widest point.
  2. Measure from the base to the highest point, including foam, stems or tissue.
  3. Add a little room so the item slides in without rubbing the wall.
  4. Choose a shallow lid or a deeper one.
  5. Send the diameter and height in inches. We also accept millimeters.

How is a round box built?

Board folds easily into corners but resists a smooth curve. So a round box is built another way. A strip of rigid board is rolled into a ring and joined to a circular base. The lid follows the same method with a shorter wall.

Paper is then wrapped around the outside. It can be plain kraft, white, or printed with your pattern or logo.

The result feels solid in the hand. The curved wall resists squeezing, and the lid adds a second layer around the top. That is why many customers keep the box after the gift is gone.

What print and finishes work on a round box?

The wrap goes all the way around, so repeat patterns look good from every side. Stripes, florals and geometric prints all work well. Put your logo on the lid, where it faces the customer first. For artwork basics, browse our custom printed boxes for brands.

Matte or gloss lamination protects the print from fingerprints. Foil stamping adds a metallic edge or logo. Embossing gives plain kraft a quiet, tactile mark.

  • Full color CMYK print on the wrap and lid
  • One color logo on a kraft lid
  • Gold or silver foil on the lid rim
  • Printed interior for a hidden pattern
  • Spot UV to make a logo shine

Can I order round boxes as a nesting set?

Yes. A nesting set is two or more round boxes in stepped sizes, each fitting inside the next. Gift sellers like them because one design can be sold as small, medium and large.

Send the sizes you want and we check that every box clears its neighbor. You can repeat the same print across the set. Or you can change the color on each size, so shoppers tell them apart at a glance.

How do I ship a round box safely?

On its own, a round box is not the best shape for the trip to a customer. The curved wall can roll, and a shipping label does not sit flat on it. Place it inside a square carton instead. Our standard shipping boxes for outer cartons are made to the size you need.

Fill the gaps so the round box cannot slide around. For flowers, fix the foam or vase to the base so it cannot tip. For hats, support the brim with tissue.

What mistakes should I avoid with round boxes?

The most common error is leaving out the foam or stems when you measure a bouquet. The box then comes out too short. The second is picking a very shallow lid on a tall box. That lid can slip off when someone carries the box by its sides.

The third is expecting flat packs. Round boxes arrive made up, so they need more shelf space than folding cartons. Check your storage before placing a big order. A little crinkle paper shred for padding also keeps contents from shifting under the lid.

Round Cardboard Boxes: questions

12 answers
Do round cardboard boxes go by a different name?

Most people call it a hat box. It has a circular base and a lid that fits over the rim.

Are round boxes a good choice for flowers?

Yes. Florists often set arrangements in foam inside the base. Give us the arrangement's diameter and height when you request a quote.

Do round boxes arrive flat?

No. A curved wall cannot fold, so they arrive made up. Plan extra storage space compared with folding boxes.

Can I get a nesting set of round boxes?

Yes. We can make two or more sizes that sit inside each other, in matching or identical designs.

Can I ship a round box without an outer carton?

We advise against it. The curved wall can roll and labels do not sit flat. Use a square outer carton with filler.

How do I measure for a round box?

Send the inside diameter and inside height. We build the lid to fit over the outside of the wall.

Can the whole wrap be printed?

Yes. The wrap can carry full color print all the way around, with a logo or pattern on the lid.

Can I order a plain kraft round box?

Yes. Kraft gives a natural look. Add a one color logo or embossing on the lid for a simple brand mark.

How is a round box different from a cylinder box?

A round box is wide and low with a lift-off lid. A cylinder box is tall and narrow, closer to a tube.

How much do round cardboard boxes cost?

They start from $0.30 a box. Size, wrap, print and quantity set the exact figure, which we send by email.

How soon will my custom round boxes with lids be made and delivered?

Your round boxes and their lids are produced in 4 to 6 business days after you approve the proof. Free tracked US shipping then takes 2 to 3 business days.

What if my round boxes arrive damaged?

Email photos within 10 days. Damaged boxes are either reprinted or refunded, your choice.
