What is a two piece lid box?
This style has a base tray that holds your product and a loose lid that slides down over the walls. The lid is made slightly bigger than the base so the two parts meet cleanly.
Nothing folds shut or tucks in. You hold the base, raise the lid and the box is open.
If you would rather keep the lid attached to the base, look at our hinged lid box styles instead.
Who buys two piece lid boxes?
Etsy and Shopify sellers order them for candles, soap sets and jewelry. Subscription brands like the repeat unboxing, since only the tissue or insert card needs to change each month.
Bakeries and caterers pack dessert assortments in them. Offices use plain kraft versions for welcome kits, files and event swag.
- Online shops packing gift sets for birthdays, weddings and Valentine's Day
- Subscription brands sending a themed box every month
- Clothing and shoe sellers who fold items flat
- Bakeries, chocolatiers and restaurants boxing treats
- Offices and homes storing paperwork, photos and keepsakes
Should I choose a full depth lid or a shallow lid?
Lid depth changes how the box looks and how stiff the walls feel. This comparison covers the usual choices.
| Option | Look | Feel | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full depth lid | Lid hides the whole base wall | Two layers of board on every side | Storage, shoes, heavier sets |
| Shallow lid | Base wall stays visible below the lid | Firm along the top rim | Gift boxes, apparel, subscriptions |
| Thumb notch | Small half-round cut in the base | No change to the walls | Snug lids that are hard to grip |
| Two-tone set | Lid and base in different colors | Depends on the lid chosen | Brand reveal and seasonal sets |
How do I measure for a two piece box?
Give us the inside size of the base. We calculate the lid from it, so the two parts always fit each other.
Lay out your product with any tissue, card or wrapping, then add a little room around it. For apparel, measure the item folded the way you sell it.
Our guide on measuring a box the right way walks through length, width and height step by step.
Then pick the lid depth. Roughly one third of the base height is a common choice for gifts.
What board should I pick for the base and lid?
Small boxes for rings, candles and cosmetics usually use white or kraft paperboard. It folds sharp and prints crisply.
Sneakers, sweaters and filled subscription kits do better in E flute, about 1/16 in thick. The fluted layer stops the base from sagging.
Large storage boxes can use B flute (about 1/8 in) or C flute (about 5/32 in). Read our single wall and double wall board guide if you are unsure how much strength you need.
Can I print the base and lid differently?
Yes. The two parts are printed separately, so a plain kraft lid over a bright base is easy to do.
Print runs from plain to full color CMYK, inside and outside, on both parts. Embossing, foil stamping, spot UV and a matte or gloss laminate all look best on the lid top.
Place your logo on the top face, not the lid rim. You can try placements in Design Your Box before you send artwork.
Every order gets a free design proof before anything is printed.
How should I pack a two piece lid box?
Start with tissue or crinkle paper in the base. Set the heaviest item down first and the lightest on top.
Leave a small gap between the product and the underside of the lid. A lid that has to press down on the contents will bulge and look ill-fitted.
A paper band, ribbon or sticker across the seam keeps the lid in place during handling. For orders going to customers, slide the closed box into an outer carton as well.
What mistakes should I avoid?
Most problems come from a handful of small oversights.
- Sending the outside lid size when we need the base inside size
- Choosing a tight lid for a heavy box with no thumb notch
- Using paperboard for a big storage box that needs fluted board
- Putting a logo on the base wall where the lid will cover it
- Shipping the box without a band or outer carton
Do two piece boxes work for storage?
They do. A corrugated lift-off box holds paperwork, photos, toys and seasonal items, and hand holes in the end walls make it easier to carry.
A full depth lid doubles the walls around the box, which helps when you stack boxes on a shelf. For records you plan to keep for years, our archive boxes for filing paperwork are another option.
Plain kraft is the usual choice. A one color label panel on the end shows what is inside.

Two Piece Lid Boxes: questions
12 answersWhat does two piece mean on a box?
It means the box is built from a separate base and a separate lid. The lid lifts off completely and is not attached.
Will the lid fit snugly?
We size the lid from your base inside measurements, so it slides on neatly. Add a thumb notch if you want a closer fit.
Can the lid and base be different colors?
Yes. Each part is printed on its own, so you can pair a plain lid with a printed base or use two colors.
How deep should the lid be?
For gift boxes, about one third of the base height is typical. Storage boxes often use a lid that covers the full wall.
Are these good for subscription boxes?
Yes. The lid gives a tidy reveal each month. Use E flute for weight and add a band if the box travels in a carton.
Can I add hand holes to a larger box?
Yes, on bigger corrugated versions. They are cut into the end walls so the box is easier to lift.
Do the parts arrive assembled?
No. Both parts ship flat and you fold and lock them by hand when you are ready to pack.
What board suits sneakers?
E flute or B flute keeps the base square under the weight of a pair of shoes and holds up when boxes are stacked.
Can I print the underside of the lid and the inside of the base?
Yes. Both surfaces take the same print options as the outside, so you can add a pattern or a short thank-you message that shows when the box is opened.
Is there a size limit?
Each box is made to your inside length, width and height. Send your measurements and we confirm what works for the board you want.
How soon will my base and lid arrive after I order?
Your base and lid are made together, and that run takes 4–6 business days from proof approval. Free tracked shipping then takes 2–3 business days.
What if the lid does not fit properly?
Email photos within 10 days of delivery. Misprinted, damaged or defective boxes are reprinted or refunded.
