What are hexagon boxes?
A hexagon box has six flat sides of the same width, like one cell of a honeycomb. We cut and fold it from a single flat sheet. The panels lock at a glued or tucked seam.
The style varies a lot. You can have a short lidded box, a tall slim carton, or a long box that lies on its side and opens at the end.
Every version ships flat. Your team folds each box by hand before packing.
Who buys hexagon boxes?
Most buyers want something that looks different from the rectangles around it. Etsy and Shopify sellers use hexagons to make a small product feel like a gift. Farmers market vendors like how a table of them draws people over.
Some products suit the shape on their own. Honey producers like the honeycomb link, and candle makers like how six flats frame a round jar.
- Honey, jam and sauce makers packing glass jars
- Candle and wax melt brands that sell gift sets
- Tea and coffee shops filling pouches or small tins
- Apparel brands rolling socks or tees into a long box
- Wedding and birthday planners handing out favors
- Subscription brands that want a memorable first unboxing
Which hexagon style fits my product?
Start with how the product sits and how your customer opens the box. The styles we make most often are listed below. If yours is not listed, ask us.
| Style | Opens | Shape | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Short hexagon with lid | Lift-off lid | Wide and low | Candles, chocolates, gifts |
| Hexagon with tuck top | Top flaps tuck in | Near square | Jars, tea, soap sets |
| Tall hexagon | Top or bottom end | Tall and slim | Bottles, rolled art, gift sets |
| Lying-down hexagon | Hinged end flap | Long, on its side | Socks, tees, scarves |
How do I measure for a hexagon box?
A hexagon is not measured like a square box. We need the width across two opposite flat sides. Then add the inside height for an upright box, or the length for one on its side.
Measure the product at its widest point. A jar 3 in wide usually sits well in a hexagon about 3.25 to 3.5 in across the flats.
Not sure how to start? Our guide on how to measure a product for a box walks through it. We accept inches or mm.
What board should I choose?
Kraft or white paperboard is the usual pick for light and mid-weight items. It folds into crisp edges and takes print cleanly.
Heavy glass jars or candles in thick holders do better in E flute, which is about 1/16 in (1.5 mm). It adds stiffness without much bulk.
For large tubes that travel on their own, B flute at about 1/8 in (3 mm) is the safer choice. The corrugated board flute guide compares each thickness side by side.
What print and finishes can I get?
Six panels mean six canvases. Some brands put the logo on every second side. Others wrap one pattern around the whole box.
We print plain, one color, two color or full color CMYK, outside and inside. Add matte or gloss lamination, spot UV, foil stamping or embossing if you want a premium feel.
Place your artwork in Design Your Box and we will check it for free. Our designers also offer free layout help, and you see a free proof before anything prints.
Can I add a window or an insert?
Yes to both. A window on one or more panels lets shoppers see the product before they buy. It works well for tea, soap and anything colorful.
A card insert with a round cut-out holds a jar or candle in the center. That stops it sliding into a corner and keeps the folds straight. See our corrugated inserts for boxes for other holding options.
Tell us about windows and inserts when you ask for a quote. Both change how we cut the sheet.
How should I pack and ship hexagon boxes?
Fold the box fully before the product goes in. A box that is only half formed can twist and strain the seam.
For jars, wrap the glass or add a ring of paper so it never touches the walls. Close lids and tuck tops by pressing the flat panels, not the corners.
Printed hexagons should travel inside a stronger outer carton. Hexagons pack side by side, and you fill the small triangular gaps with paper. Our shipping boxes for outer cartons suit this job.
On a table, short hexagons nest together in a honeycomb pattern. Tall ones stand in rows like bottles.
What mistakes should I avoid?
The six-sided shape has a few traps of its own. Check this list before you send your sizes.
- Measuring corner to corner instead of across the flats
- Leaving out the jar lid or wick when measuring height
- Using thin paperboard for heavy glass that needs E flute
- Running small text across a fold, where it bends round a corner
- Mailing a printed hexagon with no outer carton
- Ordering a tall box that will not fit the retailer's shelf gap
Should I pick a hexagon or a round box?
Round boxes are made from rolled tube, which is a different process. A hexagon gives a similar soft outline but folds from flat board.
Print looks sharper on flat panels than on a curved surface. Text sits square on each face, and the box will not roll off a counter.
If you truly need a round shape, look at cardboard cylinder boxes for round products. Otherwise a hexagon is often simpler.

Hexagon Boxes: questions
12 answersHow do you measure a hexagon box?
Measure straight across between two opposite flat sides, then add the inside height, or the length for a box on its side. Corner to corner gives a figure that is too big.
Will a round jar fit in a hexagon box?
Yes. Choose a width across the flats slightly larger than the jar's diameter. An insert keeps the jar centered.
Can hexagon boxes have a window?
Yes. We can cut a window into one or more side panels so shoppers can see the product.
Do hexagon boxes come with lids?
They can. Short styles often use a lift-off lid. Others close with a tuck top or a hinged end flap.
Are hexagon boxes strong enough for glass?
In E flute or B flute corrugated, yes, for jars and candles. Paperboard suits lighter items such as tea or soap.
Can you make a tall hexagon box?
Yes. Tall versions suit bottles, rolled art and gift sets. Tell us the height you need and the measurement across the flats.
What is a lying-down hexagon box?
It rests on one side and opens at the end. People use it for rolled socks, tees and scarves.
Do hexagon boxes arrive flat?
Yes. They ship flat, and you fold them into six-sided form by hand before packing.
Can I print a pattern around all six sides?
Yes. An all-over pattern runs across every panel. Keep small text away from the fold lines.
Are hexagon boxes good for wedding favors?
Small ones are a popular choice. Print names or a date on the lid to make each favor personal.
How much do hexagon boxes cost?
Pricing starts from $0.30 a box. The exact figure for your size and print comes in your emailed quote.
What if my boxes arrive damaged?
Email photos within 10 days. We reprint or refund boxes that are damaged, misprinted or defective.
