What counts as an eco friendly box?
No single label makes a box green. It comes down to how you specify the order.
Start with paper only. A box of bare board, with no film on top, is easy for customers to sort with their other cardboard.
Add a snug fit and every order uses less board. Most of the benefit comes from sensible habits, not from an exotic material.
Which choices matter most?
Some decisions change the amount of material far more than others. Work down this list in order.
- Size the box to the product so there is little empty space
- Choose the lightest board that still protects the contents
- Skip lamination and leave the kraft bare
- Print in one or two colors instead of covering the whole box
- Pick a style that locks shut and needs no plastic tape
- Hold items in place with paper inserts, not foam
How do finishes compare for a paper-only box?
Finishes are where a box can stop being plain paper. The table shows what each option adds.
If an all-paper box is the goal, the first rows are the ones to choose.
| Option | What it adds | Effect on an all-paper box |
|---|---|---|
| Uncoated kraft | Nothing, just board | Stays all paper |
| One or two color print | A thin layer of ink | Stays mostly paper |
| Full color CMYK | Ink across much of the surface | More ink, still board |
| Matte or gloss lamination | A plastic film | No longer plain paper |
| Foil stamping | A metallic foil layer | Adds a non-paper layer |
| Spot UV | A glossy coating on set areas | Adds a coated area |
| Embossing | A raised shape pressed into the board | Stays all paper |
How do I size an eco friendly box?
A close fit is the easiest green step. Each extra inch of height adds board on four sides and air you must fill.
Measure the product, or the stack of items, at its widest points. Then add only enough room to slide it in and out. Our steps for measuring a box correctly cover the details.
Smaller boxes also stack tighter on shelves and in trucks. If you sell in several order sizes, two or three snug boxes beat one big box padded with filler.
Which board should I choose?
Kraft is the usual pick. It has a natural brown look that suits simple print.
E flute, about 1/16 in (1.5 mm), works for small mailers and retail packs. B flute, about 1/8 in (3 mm), cushions heavier goods. Double wall BC, about 1/4 in (7 mm), is for contents that truly need it. Our guide to corrugated flute sizes explains the differences.
Heavier board adds weight to every order, so ask us which flute your product needs. For light retail items, kraft paperboard has no flute and folds into a slim carton.
How should I print an eco friendly box?
One color on kraft is the classic look and uses very little ink. Black, forest green and navy all read well on brown board.
Two colors let you add an accent without flooding the box. Full color CMYK works too, though shades look warmer and softer than on white board.
Inside print is available for a short message under the lid. Plenty of brands keep the inside bare. A small logo and web address on top can be enough.
What can I pack with instead of plastic?
Your goal is to keep the product still using paper. A good fit does most of that work already.
For leftover gaps, try paperboard inserts, folded kraft sheets or shredded paper. A little crinkle paper for light items looks neat in gift orders.
If you need tape, choose paper tape to match the kraft. Many mailer styles lock shut with tabs and need none.
Clothing often needs nothing extra once the box fits. Once the folded garment matches the inside size, just close the lid.
What mistakes undo an eco friendly box?
It is easy to pick kraft and then add things that work against it. Watch for these.
- Laminating a box that you market as plain and natural
- Ordering one oversized box for every product
- Stuffing plastic air pillows into a paper box
- Printing green claims you cannot back up
- Choosing double wall board for light, sturdy goods
What should the box say about itself?
Keep wording factual. Telling customers the box is cardboard and can go with their cardboard recycling is clear and useful.
Skip broad claims or badges you cannot prove. We print the text you approve, so check every line on the proof.
A short note asking customers to flatten the box is a plain instruction, not a claim. Many shoppers appreciate it.

Eco Friendly Boxes: questions
12 answersIs kraft better than white board for the environment?
Kraft is usually left bare with light print, which keeps things simple. Correct sizing and skipping plastic film matter more than the color of the board.
Can I get an eco box with no lamination?
Yes. Uncoated kraft is a standard choice. Ink goes straight onto the board with no film over it.
Do these boxes close without tape?
Many styles lock shut with tabs and a folding lid. You can still add paper tape if you want extra hold.
Does full color printing ruin the idea?
It uses more ink than one or two colors, but the box is still board. On kraft the shades appear softer than on white.
Can I print that my box is recyclable?
We print the words you approve. Stick to factual statements you can support, and review them on the proof.
What filler goes best with kraft?
Paperboard inserts, kraft sheets and shredded paper all keep the pack paper-based. A snug box needs less of any of them.
Which flute is the lightest?
E flute, about 1/16 in (1.5 mm), is the thinnest corrugated we offer. It fits small and medium goods that are not heavy.
Does foil stamping make a box non-paper?
Foil adds a thin metallic layer. Embossing gives a raised logo using only the board, if you want to stay all paper.
Can you make inserts from paper instead of foam?
Yes. Inserts are cut from corrugated or paperboard so each item sits securely in its own space.
Will an eco box protect breakable items?
It can, when the board and insert suit the product. B flute or double wall BC with a fitted insert adds protection.
Can I preview the kraft look before paying for print?
Every order includes a free design proof showing your artwork on kraft. Nothing is printed until you approve it.
Do eco boxes take longer to produce?
No. Production runs 4–6 business days after proof approval, the same as our other custom boxes.
