Quick answer

What are corrugated boxes?

Corrugated boxes are built from board with a rippled paper layer glued between two flat liners. That ripple gives the box strength without much weight. Most orders use single wall E, B or C flute, or double wall BC for heavier loads.

What is a corrugated box made of?

Corrugated board has three parts. Two flat paper liners sit on the faces, and a rippled layer called the flute runs between them.

Each ripple works like a small arch. Together they carry weight from above and resist dents from the sides.

Change the flute size and the board behaves differently. Fine flutes print cleanly, and coarse flutes cushion better. You can browse the full corrugated and shipping range to compare styles.

Which flute size should I choose?

You do not have to memorize the letters. Match the thickness to what you ship and how far it travels.

If you want more background, read our corrugated board flute guide before you decide.

  • Thin flutes fold sharply and show fine print detail.
  • Thick flutes leave more padding around the product.
  • Double wall adds the most stacking support.
GradeThicknessWorks well for
E fluteAbout 1/16 in (1.5 mm)Printed mailers, retail packs, light goods
B fluteAbout 1/8 in (3 mm)Everyday cartons and tuck end boxes
C fluteAbout 5/32 in (4 mm)Larger cartons that need more cushion
BC double wallAbout 1/4 in (7 mm)Heavy, breakable or stacked products

What styles of corrugated box can you make?

The slotted carton is the familiar shipping box. It has four flaps at the top and bottom, and you close it with tape. It packs fast and handles tall or oddly shaped items.

Mailers fold from a single sheet into a tray with a lid that locks. They open like a gift and rarely need tape. Tuck end boxes close with a flap at one or both ends, which suits bottles and tubes. Handle boxes add a carry grip.

Who buys custom corrugated boxes?

Anyone who ships or stores product eventually wants a box that fits. Stock sizes leave gaps, and gaps mean extra filler and extra cost.

A box cut to the product also speeds up the packing table. Nobody has to trim flaps or hunt for the closest size.

  1. Etsy and Shopify sellers who want one right-sized box per product.
  2. Subscription brands that send a printed mailer every month.
  3. Warehouses and fulfillment teams packing the same item all day.
  4. Restaurants and bakeries boxing takeout orders and gift trays.
  5. Offices sending welcome kits, swag and event supplies.

How do I measure for a corrugated box?

Measure your product at its longest, widest and tallest points. If it goes in a pouch or inner wrap, measure it that way. Those numbers are your inside length, width and height.

Then add room for protection. A snug fit needs about 1/8 to 1/4 in on each side. Wrapped items usually need 1/2 to 1 in, depending on the padding.

Do not add board thickness yourself, because we account for it when we set the outside size. Our step by step box measuring guide shows where to place the tape.

Can corrugated boxes be printed?

Yes. We print plain, one color, two color or full color CMYK. You can print the outside, the inside, or both.

A single color logo on kraft keeps the cost down and looks straightforward. A white liner makes full color artwork brighter. Mailers often carry inside print, so a pattern or message greets the customer at the lid.

Finishes include uncoated kraft, matte or gloss lamination, spot UV, foil stamping and embossing. Our designers help with layout for free, and you see a free proof first. Read more about custom printed box options.

Should I pick a kraft or a white liner?

Kraft is the natural brown paper. It hides scuffs from handling, suits one color print, and gives a plain, working look that many shops like.

White is bleached paper on the face. It lets colors look cleaner, especially light shades and photos. Some brands use white outside and kraft inside, or the other way around for a small surprise on opening.

Choose white for full color artwork. Choose kraft for a logo and a shipping label.

How should I pack a corrugated box?

A good box still needs good packing. Put heavy items on the base and lighter ones above them. Fill every gap so nothing shifts when you give the box a gentle shake.

On cartons, tape the center seam and both edge seams. On mailers, press every tab fully into its slot. For fragile products, a fitted piece does better than loose filler, so look at our fitted corrugated inserts for protection.

What mistakes should I avoid when ordering?

Many buyers pick the thickest board for everything. That adds cost and weight when a single wall box would do the job.

Others go too thin. A fine E flute mailer looks sharp, but a glass jar may need something stronger. Pick the board for the product and the trip, not only the look.

Another slip is ordering one size for every product. A few well-chosen sizes cut filler and can lower shipping costs, as our guide to cheaper box shipping explains.

Before a big run, pack your real product in a similar box and send it to yourself. The result tells you a lot.

How long does a corrugated box order take?

Production takes 4–6 business days after you approve your free design proof. Shipping is free and tracked to any US address, and transit takes 2–3 business days.

Boxes arrive flat in bundles, so they store on a shelf until you need them. See our shipping details for US orders for more.

Corrugated Boxes: questions

12 answers
Is corrugated board the same as cardboard?

Not exactly. Cardboard is a casual term for many materials. Corrugated board has a rippled middle layer, which makes it stiffer for shipping.

Which flute is best for a printed mailer?

E flute, about 1/16 in thick, has the smoothest face and the crispest print. B flute works when the mailer needs more padding.

When should I choose double wall?

Pick BC double wall, about 1/4 in thick, for heavy, breakable or stacked products. It adds the most support.

Can I order white corrugated boxes?

Yes. We make boxes with a white outer liner. The inside liner can be white or kraft.

Do corrugated mailers need tape?

Usually not. Tabs or locking ears hold the lid shut. Slotted cartons are closed with packing tape.

Can you print inside the box?

Yes. Inside print is available on every style we make. Mailers use it most often.

Are the boxes made to my exact size?

Yes. We cut each order to your inside length, width and height. Inches are preferred, and we accept millimeters too.

Should I send inside or outside measurements?

Send inside measurements. We set the outside size from the board you select.

Do corrugated cartons and mailers ship flat or already folded?

They ship flat in bundles. You fold each one by hand when you need it, and the flat bundles take up little shelf space.

Can a corrugated box have a handle?

Yes. Handle boxes have a cut-out grip, and cartons can include hand holes at the ends.

Can I check my corrugated box artwork before it goes to print?

Yes. We send a free design proof that shows your artwork on the box layout. Production starts only after you approve it.

Is shipping free to every US address?

Yes. Shipping is free and tracked to any US address, and you can expect 2–3 business days in transit.
