What are business card boxes?

A business card box is a small carton cut to the size of a card stack. Cards sit flat inside, so the edges stay sharp and the stack never fans out in a bag.

Three versions are common. A tuck top box is the quick everyday option. A flip lid box opens like a book. A two piece box has a lift-off lid.

Any of them can be printed or left as plain kraft. For other paper goods, see our stationery boxes for notecards and paper.

Who buys business card boxes?

Print shops are the largest group. They box finished cards before the client picks them up, and a neat carton makes a small job feel complete.

Companies also order for their own teams. A sales rep who pulls a crisp card from a branded box makes a good first impression.

  • Online and local print shops
  • Freelance designers delivering brand kits
  • Real estate agents and insurance brokers
  • Salons and spas with appointment cards
  • HR teams building new hire welcome kits
  • Wedding planners and event stationers

Which box style should I pick?

Each style suits a different job. The table compares the three we make most often.

For a card people keep on a desk, try a two piece box with a lift-off lid. It opens a little slower, which feels more premium.

StyleHow it feelsTypical use
Tuck topSimple and fast to openEveryday print shop jobs
Flip lidHinged, opens like a bookPremium cards and gift kits
Two piece lidSolid, keepsake feelExecutive cards and desk boxes

How many cards fit in one box?

The count depends on card thickness. A thick laminated card takes far more room than a thin one, so fewer fit in the same box.

Stack the real cards and measure the height. Add about 1/8 in so the stack slides in and out without catching.

Foil, painted edges and duplexed stock can add thickness. Always measure the finished cards, not a sample. Our guide on how to measure a box explains inside dimensions.

  1. Gather a stack of the final printed cards.
  2. Count out the number you want in each box.
  3. Measure the stack height with a ruler.
  4. Measure the card length and width.
  5. Add about 1/8 in to each measurement.
  6. Send us that inside size, or the card size and count.

Which board is best for a card box?

Folding paperboard is the usual choice. It keeps the box compact and holds fine print well. Kraft gives a natural look, while white board makes colors look bright.

E flute (about 1/16 in, 1.5 mm) adds cushioning when boxes ship on their own. Many sellers instead pack card boxes inside a small mailing box, which keeps the card box slim.

A colored box does not need colored board. We print the color onto white or kraft, so the shade choices stay wide open.

What small details make a card box easier to use?

A thumb notch on the front is the most helpful detail. You pinch the top cards and lift them out without tipping the box.

A tuck flap with a slit lock keeps the lid closed in a briefcase. On flip lid boxes, a slight lip on the lid edge makes opening easier.

Tell us which details you want when you request a quote. Our designers show them on the free proof.

Can I print my logo on a card box?

Yes. Choose plain, one color, two color or full color CMYK, on the outside and inside. A one color logo on kraft is a popular, low-fuss choice.

If the cards are your own, match the box to the card artwork. Place your logo in Design Your Box to preview the layout.

  • Uncoated kraft for a plain, natural look
  • Matte lamination on dark printed boxes
  • Gloss lamination on bright colors
  • Foil stamping on a name or monogram
  • Embossing or spot UV on a logo

Can one box design work for many clients?

Yes. Many print shops pick a single plain or lightly branded box for every job.

A sticker or rubber stamp then adds the client name or order number. One design covers every order, so you carry less stock. Small shops can also browse boxes for small business owners.

Can a card box hold more than cards?

Yes, with a larger footprint. A popular gift kit pairs a card stack with a pen, a notepad or a few stickers.

We usually suggest a flip lid or two piece box with a divider. See folding carton inserts for small items. One bay holds the cards and another holds the pen, so nothing scuffs the top card.

Agencies sometimes add a thank-you card cut to the same size. It rides on top of the stack and is the first thing the client reads.

What mistakes should I avoid with card boxes?

Card boxes are tiny, so small errors show. These cause the most trouble.

It also pays to order a few extra. Clients reorder often, and a matching box keeps the second batch looking like the first. Shipping boxes alone? Read the cheapest way to ship boxes first.

  • Sizing for thin stock when the job uses thick board
  • Skipping the thumb notch on a tuck top box
  • Leaving no room for a protective sleeve
  • Shipping card boxes loose in a plastic bag
  • Printing fine text that fades on kraft

Business Card Boxes: questions

12 answers
What size box fits standard business cards?

Standard US cards measure 3.5 × 2 in. A box about 3.6 × 2.1 in inside gives room to lift the stack out.

How many cards will one box hold?

That depends on card thickness and the box height. Send a stack height or a card count and we size the box to match.

Can you make boxes for square cards?

Yes. Square and mini cards just need their own inside length and width.

Which style works best for a print shop?

A plain or lightly printed tuck top box suits most shop orders. It folds fast and fits any client.

Can I add a thumb notch?

Yes. A notch on the front lets you pinch the top cards and lift them out.

Do you make flip lid card boxes?

Yes. Flip lid boxes open like a book and suit premium cards and gift kits.

Can I ship card boxes on their own?

Use E flute corrugated if they travel alone. Otherwise, pack them inside a small mailing box.

Can I match the box color to my card design?

Yes. Full color CMYK print lets you carry your card colors onto the box.

Can my logo be foiled on the lid?

Yes. Foil stamping is available on any panel, including the lid.

How soon can I get my card boxes?

Production takes 4–6 business days after proof approval. Free tracked shipping adds 2–3 business days.

What if my boxes arrive with a defect?

Send photos of the misprint, damage or defect within 10 days. We reprint or refund the affected boxes.
