What are mug shipping boxes?
A mug shipping box is a small carton, close to a cube, built around a single mug. The inside size leaves space for the handle, so the mug stands upright and does not lean on a wall.
Most styles close with a tuck flap and need no tape. You can print the outside, the inside, or both, and add a window if you want shoppers to see the mug.
We make each box to your inside length, width and height. It fits your mug, not a generic one.
Who buys mug shipping boxes?
Etsy and Shopify sellers make up the biggest group. A shop that sends out mugs every day needs a box that is fast to pack and looks good on arrival.
Print-on-demand studios want one box per order with the same artwork each time. Potters want something that shows off a handmade piece. If you are still setting up, see our page on boxes sized for small business orders.
- Etsy and Shopify mug shops
- Potters and ceramic studios
- Coffee roasters adding a mug to a subscription
- Cafés and restaurants selling branded merchandise
- Offices ordering welcome kits and event gifts
Getting the right box size for your mug
The handle causes most sizing mistakes. Measure from the far side of the mug body to the outer edge of the handle.
That number is your box length. For a longer walkthrough, read our guide to measuring a box.
- Set the mug on a flat surface with the handle facing sideways.
- Measure from the far edge of the body to the outside of the handle.
- Measure the body across its widest point for the width.
- Measure from the base to the rim, or to the top of the lid.
- Add 1/8 to 1/4 in each way, and a little more if you use an insert.
Which board should I pick for a mug box?
Paperboard gives the sharpest print, which suits a mug sitting on a gift shop shelf. Corrugated adds a cushioning layer in the wall, which helps once the box goes into a carrier network.
E flute keeps the box slim. B flute is thicker and suits heavy stoneware or a two-mug set. Our corrugated flute guide for buyers explains the differences.
Some sellers order both. They use paperboard for retail stock and E flute for web orders, with the same artwork on each.
| Board | Thickness | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Kraft or white paperboard | Thin card | Retail shelves and gift sets |
| E flute single wall | About 1/16 in (1.5 mm) | Single mugs sent to customers |
| B flute single wall | About 1/8 in (3 mm) | Heavy stoneware or paired mugs |
Does a mug box need an insert?
A close-cut box holds many mugs well on its own. An insert helps when your mugs vary a little in size, or when a window means the mug must face front.
A corrugated insert grips the body and keeps the handle off the walls. You can add custom corrugated inserts for fit to the same quote.
Inserts also speed up packing. The mug drops in, the insert holds it, and the lid tucks shut.
Can I add a window to my mug box?
Yes. A die-cut window on the front panel shows the glaze or printed design without opening the box. It works well on a shelf or a market table.
For orders that travel, a solid front adds a bit more protection, and your print does the selling.
Keep the window away from the handle side. Our designers can line it up on the free proof.
Can one box hold a mug and a gift set?
Yes, with extra room. A roaster might pair a mug with a bag of beans, and a tea shop might add a tin or a few sachets.
We size the box around everything inside, not the mug alone. A divider keeps a heavy tin from knocking the glaze. If the set is large, look at a two piece lid box for sets instead.
What print and finish options are there?
You can choose plain, one color, two color or full color CMYK, inside and outside. Kraft with one dark ink suits handmade pottery. White board with full color suits photo mugs and brand merchandise.
Finishes go on top of the print. Place your logo first in Design Your Box, then send it with your sizes.
- Matte lamination for a soft, modern look
- Gloss lamination for bright, punchy color
- Foil stamping on a studio name or mark
- Spot UV on a logo over a matte background
- Embossing for a raised mug outline or crest
- Uncoated kraft for a natural, earthy feel
How do I ship a mug without it breaking?
Wrap the mug in paper first, with extra turns around the handle. Stuff a loose sheet into the hollow so the walls are held from both sides.
Most sellers then put the mug box inside a slightly larger outer carton with paper fill around it. Our page on ecommerce shipping boxes for outer cartons covers that second layer.
Mark the top of the outer carton. A mug does best when it travels on its base.
What mistakes break mugs in transit?
A few habits cause most breakage. Fix these and your mugs are far more likely to arrive whole.
- Leaving the handle out of the length
- Ordering a box so loose the mug rattles
- Skipping the paper inside the mug
- Sending a thin retail box with no outer carton
- Placing a window over the handle side

Mug Shipping Boxes: questions
12 answersWhat size box fits an 11 oz mug?
A box near 5 × 3.75 × 4 in inside often fits a standard 11 oz mug with its handle. Send your exact measurements and we cut the box to suit.
Do I need tape to close a mug box?
No. The tuck flap locks into the front panel. You only need tape on an outer shipping carton.
Can I ship a mug box on its own?
A wrapped mug in a snug E flute box can go out without an outer carton. For fragile or handmade mugs, add one.
Can the box have a window?

Can you make a box for two mugs?
Yes. A twin box holds two mugs side by side, often with a divider between them.
Which board suits handmade pottery?
E flute kraft is a common pick for handmade mugs. B flute suits heavier stoneware.
Can I print inside the box?
Yes. A care note or thank-you line under the lid is a popular choice.
Do you offer black mug boxes?
Dark kraft and black printed boxes are both possible. Tell us the look you want and we show it on the proof.
Will the box fit a mug with a lid?
Yes. Just measure the height up to the top of the lid. Tell us if the lid comes off so we can allow for it.
