What is a product box?
A product box is a printed carton made to hold one item or one set. It protects the contents, shows your brand and carries the facts a shopper wants before buying.
Picture a lip balm carton, a tea box on a café counter or a drawer box around a candle. Each is cut to the thing inside, not picked from a stock list.
If you want a wider look at branded packaging, see our custom printed boxes for any brand.
Who needs custom product boxes?
Any seller whose item looks plain on its own gains from a proper carton. That includes Etsy and Shopify shops, subscription brands and makers selling at craft fairs.
Stores also expect a finished box with a barcode before they stock a new line. Our page for boxes for small business owners covers the early steps.
- Skincare, haircare and cosmetics in bottles, jars and tubes
- Coffee, tea, chocolate and boxed snacks
- Phone cases, chargers and small electronics
- Candles, diffusers and soap
- Supplements that need printed directions
Which product box style should I choose?
The style sets how the box opens and how it sits on a shelf. Tall items usually suit a tuck end carton, while flat gift items suit a drawer or a lid and base.
Our tuck end boxes for bottles and tubes are the most common starting point. This table shows how the main styles compare.
| Style | How it opens | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Tuck end carton | Top flap tucks into the front | Bottles, tubes and tall items |
| Drawer and sleeve | Tray slides out of a sleeve | Gift sets and candles |
| Lid and base | Separate lid lifts away | Keepsakes and presentation packs |
| Mailer with insert | Hinged lid folds back | Sets shipped straight to buyers |
| Auto lock base carton | Tuck top, base locks itself | Jars and heavier retail items |
How do I size a product box correctly?
Measure the item at its widest points with the cap, pump and label on. A cap that sticks out an extra 1/8 in can stop a lid from closing.
Give a single item a small gap so it slides in without force. For a set, measure every piece and tell us how they should sit together.
Height needs care on tuck end styles. Too much headroom lets a bottle rattle, and too little makes the flap hard to tuck. Our guide on how to measure a box walks through it.
Should I pick paperboard or corrugated?
Paperboard is the classic retail material. Its smooth face holds fine text and barcodes well, so it suits shelf goods and items packed inside a larger shipper.
If the product box will ship on its own, choose E flute corrugated at about 1/16 in (1.5 mm). It still prints cleanly and takes knocks better. The corrugated board flute guide explains the other flutes.
Kraft gives a natural brown look. White board makes color look brighter and is the usual pick for beauty brands.
What goes on each panel of a product box?
Give every panel one job. The front sells, the back explains and the sides help when boxes sit turned on a shelf.
Keep a flat, clear patch for the barcode. Keep small text away from folds and glue flaps, where it can crack or vanish.
If you sell several flavors or scents, a color band on the front lets you change one element. The rest of the design stays the same across the line.
- Front: brand name, product name and a short line about it
- Back: ingredients, directions or contents
- Sides: size, variant or a repeated logo
- Base: barcode, batch area and contact details
Which finish works best on product boxes?
Matte lamination feels soft and suits pastel palettes. Gloss lamination makes photos and bold colors pop on a busy shelf.
Spot UV, foil stamping and embossing work best on a single focal point, like the logo. Use them everywhere and the effect fades.
Uncoated kraft suits handmade and natural goods, where a one or two color print looks right.
Lamination also guards the print against scuffs. That matters for display units that shoppers handle all day.
Do product boxes need inserts?
An insert holds the item in one spot so it will not slide or rattle. It also makes opening the box feel more finished.
Glass bottles should never sit loose against each other. A cradle with cut holes keeps them apart, and a row of slots suits vials or small tubes.
Browse our folding carton inserts for retail packs for ideas. Send the diameter and height of each piece, and we will plan the layout.
What mistakes should I avoid with product boxes?
Most problems come from sizing and artwork, not the board. A quick check before you approve the proof can save a reprint.
- Measuring the item without its cap or pump
- Running the barcode across a fold
- Using paperboard for a carton that ships alone
- Choosing hairline fonts that break up in print
- Leaving no room for required product information

Product Boxes: questions
12 answersHow is a product box different from a shipping box?
A product box presents one item, usually on a shelf. A shipping box is the outer carton that protects goods in transit.
Can you place my barcode on the box?
Yes. Send it as artwork and we will set it on a flat panel, clear of folds, so it scans cleanly.
What board suits cosmetics cartons best?
White paperboard is the usual pick because it shows color and fine text clearly. Kraft gives a more natural look.
Can a product box have a window?
Yes, many styles can take a cut window. Tell us about it when you send your sizes, and the proof will show it.
Do you make drawer style product boxes?
Yes. A tray slides out of a printed sleeve, and we size both parts to your inside measurements.
Can I order several sizes with one design?
Yes. We can adapt one design across a range of sizes so every box looks like part of the same family.
How much room should I leave around the item?
A gap of about 1/8 in is usually enough for one item. Sets and inserts need a little more, and we can advise.
Can you print directions on the side panels?
Yes. Every outside panel can carry text, and inside print is available too.
Is spot UV worth adding?
It works well on one element, such as a logo on a matte box. It adds contrast without changing the whole look.
Can product boxes ship without an outer carton?
Paperboard cartons are best packed inside a shipper. To ship one on its own, choose E flute corrugated.
Who designs the artwork?
Send finished artwork, or our designers will lay out your logo and text for free.
Do product boxes arrive already glued?
They arrive flat. Styles with a glued side seam come with it done, so you only fold and close them.
