Quick answer
What are small mailing boxes?
Small mailing boxes are compact corrugated cartons that ship flat and fold by hand into a lidded box. The front lid tucks in, so no glue or staples are needed. They are cut to the inside size of your product, which means less filler and a tidier package.

What are small mailing boxes?
A small mailing box is a fold-up corrugated carton for items that fit in one hand. It ships flat and folds into a lidded box with no glue.
The front lid tucks in, and two small flaps close the gaps at the corners. The side walls double over, so the box feels stiffer than the thin board suggests.
Think of it as the compact end of our mailer and postal box range. Same style, scaled down for lighter products.
Who buys small mailing boxes?
Most buyers are online sellers who ship many light orders every week. Etsy and Shopify shops use them for items that a poly bag does not protect well.
Subscription brands use them for monthly samples. Offices and warehouses use them for spare parts, key cards and replacement cables.
Our page on boxes for small business orders covers the wider picture.
- Jewelry makers shipping rings, bracelets and earrings
- Skincare and cosmetics brands sending minis and samples
- Candle and soap sellers with single bars or tins
- Subscription services packing a few small items each month
- Companies sending replacement parts or press samples
- Craft fair sellers who also take online orders
What is the right way to measure a product for a small mailer?
Measure the product at its longest, widest and tallest points. Include any pouch, wrap or cap that travels with it.
Small boxes leave little room for error. A quarter inch too loose lets a lip balm rattle. A tenth of an inch too tight can bow the lid.
We cut to inside length, width and height, so board thickness never eats into your space. Our step-by-step box measuring guide shows which side is which.
| What you are shipping | Add to each side | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| A rigid item such as a tin | 1/8 to 3/16 in | Slides in without forcing |
| An item in tissue or a pouch | 3/16 to 5/16 in | Wrapping adds bulk |
| Several loose small pieces | Measure them laid out | Keeps pieces from shifting |
| An item sitting in an insert | Measure the insert | The insert sets the inside size |
Which board works best for a small mailing box?
E flute, about 1/16 in (1.5 mm), is the usual pick. It folds cleanly at small sizes and keeps each package light.
B flute, about 1/8 in (3 mm), suits heavier or more fragile items such as a glass jar. The extra thickness adds cushion to the walls.
C flute, about 5/32 in (4 mm), can feel bulky on a very small box. We suggest it only when the item is dense for its size.
Double wall BC flute is rarely worth it here, because it is hard to fold at this scale. Compare every option in the corrugated board flute guide.
Kraft or white paperboard faces set the look. Kraft feels natural, and white gives brighter print.
Can I print on small mailing boxes?
Yes. Leave the box plain, add a one color or two color logo, or cover the outside and inside in full color CMYK.
A kraft box with a single color logo on the lid is a low-cost start. Gift sellers often print a thank-you message inside the lid.
White board makes bright colors look cleaner than kraft does. Kraft suits earthy, single ink artwork.
For a finish, pick from embossing, foil stamping, spot UV, or a matte or gloss laminate. On a small lid, one finish reads better than three. See our custom printed boxes for more ideas.
How do I pack a small mailing box?
Small packages get tossed around during sorting, so nothing inside should move when you shake the box.
- Fold one box and test the fit before you fill a whole batch.
- Wrap fragile pieces in tissue, or set them in a card insert.
- Tuck a little paper into any corner gaps so the item stays put.
- Close the lid firmly and press the dust flaps flat.
- Add a sticker or a strip of tape across the front if you want a tamper check.
- Place the shipping label on the lid, away from the fold lines.
What sizing mistakes should I avoid?
The most common slip is sending outside sizes instead of inside sizes. On a small box, that can cost you a quarter inch of room.
Another is using one size for every product. Two or three well-chosen sizes usually save filler and shipping money.
Sellers also forget caps and pumps. Measure cosmetics standing upright with the cap on.
Last, tiny text on a tiny lid is hard to read. Keep logos bold and leave clear space for the shipping label.
Can a smaller box lower my shipping costs?
Often it can. Shipping rates usually depend on size and weight, so a box cut close to the product may land in a cheaper tier.
Thin E flute adds very little weight. Our guide on the cheapest way to ship boxes explains how size tiers work.
Flat storage helps too. A stack of unfolded boxes takes little shelf space until you need them.
Weigh a packed sample before you choose board. If it tips the package into a higher tier, a thinner flute or a slightly smaller size may fix it.
Is a tuck front mailer the right style for me?
A tuck front mailer suits most small, light products. It opens like a little chest, which makes unboxing feel neat and deliberate.
If you handle many returns, a self seal mailer with a peel strip can save tape and time at the packing table.
For flat items such as cards or prints, a shallow box about 1 in tall often works better than a deep one. Describe the contents in your request and we will suggest a shape.

Small Mailing Boxes: questions
12 answersHow small can a small mailing box be?
We cut to whatever inside size you give us. Boxes for a single ring or lip balm can be under 4 in long.
Do small mailing boxes need tape?
No, the tuck-in lid holds them shut. Some sellers add a sticker or tape strip so an opened package is easy to spot.
Which flute is best for a small mailer?
Thin E flute, about 1/16 in, suits most light products. Pick B flute, about 1/8 in, for heavier or more fragile items.
Can I print inside a small mailing box?
Yes. You can print a hidden message under the lid or a full color CMYK pattern on every inner wall.
Do small mailing boxes arrive already folded?
They arrive flat and stacked to save space. Every box folds up by hand at your packing table, so no glue is needed.
Can I mix kraft and white boxes in one order?
Yes. Tell us the split when you ask for a quote, and we will price each version.
Will glass survive in a small mailing box?
It can with the right setup. Use B flute, a snug fit and a card or corrugated insert.
Can I order small mailing boxes with metric inside sizes?
Yes. Inches are standard here, but we accept millimeters for the inside length, width and height. Check your product at its widest points before you convert the numbers.
Do I get a proof before printing?
Yes. A free design proof comes first, and we print nothing until you approve it.
How long until my small boxes arrive?
Production takes 4–6 business days after proof approval. Free tracked shipping then takes 2–3 business days.
Do you ship small mailing boxes to any US address?
Yes. Homes, shops, offices and warehouses in the US all get free tracked shipping.
What finishes can a small mailer have?
Keep the kraft uncoated, or choose matte or gloss lamination, spot UV, foil stamping or embossing.
